Vaibhav Sooryavanshi Makes History as Youngest Player in Indian Cricket Team
Celebrations Erupt in Samastipur
Fireworks illuminated the night sky and sweets were shared among family, friends, and locals in Samastipur as they celebrated the inclusion of 15-year-old Vaibhav Sooryavanshi in India's squad for the upcoming T20I series in Ireland and England, along with the 2026 Asian Games in Japan.
A Record-Breaking Achievement
Sooryavanshi has made history by becoming the youngest player ever selected for the Indian national cricket team, breaking a 36-year-old record previously held by the legendary Sachin Tendulkar. Tendulkar debuted for India against Pakistan in 1989 at the age of 16, a record that remained unbroken for over three decades.
Family's Joy and Pride
The announcement of the squad brought immense joy to Sooryavanshi's family in Bihar's Samastipur district, with residents joining in the celebrations. His father, Sanjeev Sooryavanshi, attributed his son's success to years of hard work and dedication. He expressed his hopes for Vaibhav to excel and bring victories to the nation, stating, "Every parent dreams of their child achieving greatness, and my son has made that dream a reality. I am grateful to the selectors for believing in him."
Other family members also shared their excitement. His uncle, Rajeev Sooryavanshi, remarked, "This is a moment of immense pride for our family and the entire nation. We celebrated with fireworks and sweets, knowing that Vaibhav's selection is a dream come true. We always believed in his talent and are thankful to the selectors for this opportunity."
Vaibhav's grandmother added, "I have never felt such happiness. This joy is shared by everyone in the country. My grandson is set to play for the senior team, and I have given him my blessings."
Outstanding IPL 2026 Performance
Sooryavanshi's selection follows an impressive IPL 2026 season, where he emerged as one of the brightest young talents in cricket. Playing for the Rajasthan Royals, he dominated the tournament, finishing as the leading run-scorer with an astonishing 776 runs and a remarkable strike rate of 237.30. His fearless batting style led to a record 72 sixes, setting a new standard for power-hitting in a single IPL season.
His exceptional performance earned him multiple accolades, including the Most Valuable Player (MVP), Emerging Player of the Season, Super Striker, Orange Cap, and Super Sixes of the Season, solidifying his status as a standout player and paving his way into the national team.
Upcoming International Matches
Vaibhav Sooryavanshi will soon have the chance to showcase his skills on the international stage. India is scheduled to play a two-match T20I series against Ireland in Belfast on June 26 and 28, followed by a five-match T20I series in England from July 1 to 11.
Later this year, he will also participate in the men's cricket competition at the 2026 Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan, which will feature 10 teams, including India, Pakistan, and Bangladesh. The tournament will take place from September 24 to October 3, with preliminary matches starting on September 24.
