Seattle, June 20: The United States clinched a spot in the knockout phase of the FIFA World Cup 2026 by defeating Australia 2-0 in their Group D encounter on Friday.
This win brought the Americans to six points from their first two matches, guaranteeing their place in the round of 32 with one group match still to play.
Even without captain Christian Pulisic, who is sidelined with a calf injury, the U.S. team started strong, taking the lead in the 11th minute. Folarin Balogun made a run down the left side and delivered a low cross into the box, which Australian defender Cameron Burgess accidentally redirected into his own goal while trying to clear it, as reported by Xinhua.
Freeman expressed his emotions, stating, "It was surreal... at first, it was disallowed, so I felt anxious when it went to VAR. It was such an emotional moment because you dream of this opportunity."
Australia attempted to counter with several attacks but found it difficult to break through the well-organized U.S. defense.
Just before halftime, the United States extended their lead with a header from Alex Freeman, who is the son of Super Bowl champion wide receiver Antonio Freeman.
Australia's coach Popovic commented, "I don't know if it was the occasion, but we looked sluggish and heavy-legged. The players showed their quality in the second half, but at this level, you can't afford to start so poorly."
With a two-goal lead, the United States dominated the second half, restricting Australia to minimal scoring chances. The Socceroos pressed for a goal, but the American defense held firm to maintain their clean sheet.
Australia remains at three points and will face Paraguay in their final group match as they aim for qualification. The United States will wrap up their Group D campaign against Türkiye.
