Upcoming 6th Junior National Boxing Championships to Showcase Young Talent
Exciting Junior National Boxing Championships Set for June 2025
The 6th Junior (U-17) Boys and Girls National Boxing Championships will take place at the National Boxing Academy in Rohtak, Haryana, from June 19 to June 26, 2025. This event will feature approximately 640 promising boxers, comprising 350 boys and 290 girls, competing across various weight categories.
Both the Junior Boys and Girls competitions will include 13 weight classes, spanning from 44-46 kg to over 80 kg. The Services Sports Control Board aims to defend their title from the previous Boys’ Nationals, while Haryana will enter as the reigning champions in the Girls’ division.
Ajay Singh, President of the Boxing Federation of India, emphasized the significance of the Junior National Championship as a vital opportunity for young athletes to demonstrate their abilities to national selectors and coaches. He expressed enthusiasm over the strong participation from all teams, highlighting the potential of these young boxers to represent India in the upcoming 2032 and 2036 Olympic Games.
Additionally, this championship serves as a precursor to the Asian Youth Games scheduled for October, where boxing will be featured for the first time. Winners from this event will have the chance to compete for 14 medals at the Asian Games. The BFI is dedicated to nurturing these athletes to help them achieve their maximum potential.
Participants who won gold and silver medals at the REC Combined Talent Hunt (Junior Boys and Girls) in October 2024 will be eligible to compete in the National Championships, provided they meet the age criteria of being born between January 1, 2009, and December 31, 2010.
The championships will adhere to the World Boxing Technical and Competitions Rules, with each match consisting of three rounds lasting two minutes each, interspersed with a one-minute rest period. A ten-point scoring system will be implemented.
Indian boxing is making significant progress on the global stage. The senior team recently secured eight medals, including two golds, at the Thailand International, while the junior teams (U-15 & U-17) achieved an impressive haul of 43 medals—15 gold, six silver, and 22 bronze—at the inaugural Asian U-15 & U-17 Championships, finishing second overall and showcasing the strength of the youth program.
