Match Overview

In Navi Mumbai, UP Warriorz showcased a dominant performance, led by their captain Meg Lanning, to secure a convincing 22-run victory against the defending champions, Mumbai Indians, in the 10th match of the Women’s Premier League (WPL) 2026 held at DY Patil Stadium on Saturday.

Chasing a challenging target of 188 runs, Mumbai Indians struggled to keep up, finishing at 165 for six in their allotted 20 overs despite a late effort from Amanjot and Amelia Kerr.

The Mumbai Indians' innings began poorly, losing early wickets that set them back significantly. Opening batter Sajeevan Sajana managed only 10 runs before being dismissed during the powerplay, while Hayley Matthews, returning to the lineup, contributed just 13 runs, leaving the team in a precarious position.

Captain Harmanpreet Kaur tried to stabilize the innings but could only muster 18 runs, further complicating the chase as wickets continued to tumble, leaving Mumbai behind the required run rate.

Amelia Kerr emerged as a key player for Mumbai, delivering a spirited performance with a counter-attacking 49 runs off 28 balls, showcasing her ability to find gaps and target shorter boundaries. Her innings briefly reignited hopes for Mumbai's chase.

Kerr received valuable support from Amanjot Kaur, who scored a commendable 41 runs off 24 balls, demonstrating poise and intent as they formed a crucial partnership of 83 runs for the fifth wicket, the highest of the innings.

However, the momentum shifted when Shikha Pandey dismissed Amanjot Kaur, breaking the partnership and allowing UP Warriorz to regain control. Although Kerr remained not out, she couldn't lead her team to victory.

The UP Warriorz bowlers operated effectively as a cohesive unit, with Deepti Sharma maintaining pressure through tight overs, while Sophie Ecclestone and Kranti Gaud contributed significantly in the middle overs. Shikha Pandey's performance was particularly noteworthy, as she took key wickets at critical moments.

Batting first after losing the toss, UP Warriorz recovered from an early setback to post a formidable total of 187 for eight, a score that ultimately proved too much for Mumbai Indians, despite their spirited fightback in the final overs.

The Warriorz faced an early blow when Kiran Navgire was dismissed for a golden duck by Nicola Carey. However, captain Meg Lanning displayed her class, forming a vital partnership with fellow Australian Phoebe Litchfield to regain control of the innings.

Lanning and Litchfield combined for a remarkable 119 runs for the second wicket, marking the second-highest partnership in UP Warriorz history in the WPL. Lanning's innings included 70 runs off 45 balls, featuring 11 fours and two sixes, while Litchfield contributed 61 runs off 37 balls.

Following the departure of the Australian duo, UP Warriorz maintained their momentum with quick contributions from Chloe Tryon (21) and Harleen Deol (25), ensuring a strong finish despite a remarkable last over from Amelia Kerr, who took three wickets.
