Key Signings at the WPL 2027 Mini-Auction

Neetu David, the Chief Scout for UP Warriorz, emphasized that securing Australian captain Sophie Molineux was a top priority during the Women's Premier League (WPL) 2027 mini-auction. She praised Molineux's exceptional bowling skills and leadership qualities, expressing optimism about the team's enhanced lineup under head coach Abhishek Nayar. Molineux, who contributed to Royal Challengers Bengaluru's (RCB) championship win in 2024, sparked a bidding war between Warriorz and RCB, ultimately being signed by Warriorz for Rs 1.10 crore.

Bidding Dynamics and Team Strategy

The bidding for Molineux commenced at Rs 50 lakh, with RCB quickly entering the fray. Her price surged to Rs 95 lakh almost instantly, prompting UP Warriorz to raise their bid to Rs 1 crore. RCB countered with Rs 1.05 crore, but UP Warriorz clinched the deal with a final bid of Rs 1.10 crore. David remarked on Molineux's impressive bowling control and leadership, stating, "She will excel under Meg Lanning, and UP Warriorz will thrive with her on the team."

Enhancing Squad Depth

David expressed confidence in the franchise's bolstered batting and all-rounder options, noting the return of Grace Harris and the acquisition of seasoned Indian all-rounder Sneh Rana, alongside Molineux and Sophie Ecclestone. UP Warriorz secured Harris for Rs 30 lakh, bringing back a player who had previously represented the team in the 2023, 2024, and 2025 seasons. Harris was part of RCB's championship-winning squad in 2026 but was released prior to the auction to make way for Ellyse Perry's return.

Additionally, UP Warriorz acquired Rana at her base price of Rs 30 lakh, with no competing bids. David highlighted the significance of these signings, stating, "With Grace Harris and Sneh Rana, our middle and lower order have become significantly stronger, addressing past weaknesses in capitalizing on death overs."

Financial Strategy and Coaching Leadership

Entering the auction with the largest remaining budget and several positions to fill, UP Warriorz effectively executed their recruitment strategy. David noted that their financial flexibility and thorough pre-auction discussions were instrumental in their success. "Having a substantial budget allowed us to pursue our targets effectively," she explained.

David also commended head coach Abhishek Nayar for his clear communication and strategic vision, stating, "His clarity in discussions has been invaluable. We have a solid working relationship, and I believe we will achieve great results under his leadership."
