UP Warriorz Ends Coaching Tenure with Jon Lewis After Three Years
UP Warriorz Moves On from Jon Lewis
Lucknow (Uttar Pradesh) - The UP Warriorz have officially concluded their coaching relationship with Jon Lewis after three years in the Women’s Premier League (WPL).
Lewis initially enjoyed success with the team, guiding them to the playoffs in the inaugural WPL season in 2023, where they faced defeat against the Mumbai Indians. However, the following season saw the team struggle, finishing second to last with only three victories out of eight matches. This year, the squad faced additional challenges, including the injury of captain Alyssa Healy, leading to Deepti Sharma taking over the captaincy.
In the most recent season, the Warriorz ended up at the bottom of the standings, securing just three wins in eight games, according to reports from ESPNCricinfo.
In a heartfelt farewell, the Warriorz expressed their gratitude on Instagram, stating, "From day one, you believed in us. Through the highs, the learnings, and everything in between — Thank You, Coach Jon Lewis, for leading with heart, calm, and belief. You’ll always be a part of the Warriorz Family."
During his tenure, Lewis led the team to a total of nine victories out of 25 matches. Notably, the Warriorz set a record for the highest score in WPL history, achieving 225 runs against Royal Challengers Bengaluru earlier this year, with Georgia Voll scoring an impressive 99 not out off 56 balls.
In addition to his role with the Warriorz, Lewis was also the head coach of the England women's team since November 2022. He resigned from this position after Australia secured a clean sweep in the women's Ashes series.
Before transitioning to coaching, Lewis had a distinguished playing career in English cricket that spanned nearly two decades. He was a reliable wicket-taker for Gloucestershire, Surrey, and Sussex, concluding his playing days in 2014. His cricketing credentials include participation in one Test match, 13 One Day Internationals (ODIs), and two T20 Internationals, amassing 849 wickets in first-class cricket and 25 in international formats.
