Joshua Van's Connection to Mizoram

GUWAHATI, Oct 8: Joshua Van, the reigning UFC Flyweight Champion, expressed that his trip to Mizoram earlier this year felt like a homecoming, emphasizing the deep-rooted historical and cultural connections between the Chin and Mizo communities.
The Burmese-American fighter, who made history as the first UFC champion born in Myanmar, visited Mizoram in May and felt a profound bond with the local populace.
“Historically, we are brothers. We share the same roots. Being in Mizoram felt like home to me. It was wonderful to connect with my people,” Van shared in an exclusive interview, facilitated by a prominent sports network that broadcasts UFC events in India.
“I want to thank India for embracing our brothers in Mizoram and supporting those from Chin who seek refuge,” he added.
Known as ‘The Fearless’, Van has quickly risen through the ranks in the UFC flyweight division. He claimed the UFC Flyweight Championship by defeating Alexandre Pantoja in December 2025 and has successfully defended his title since then.
In May 2026, he achieved a knockout victory over Tatsuro Taira at UFC 328, followed by a second win against Pantoja at UFC 331 in September.
Reflecting on his rematch with Pantoja, Van expressed confidence in his abilities from the outset.
“Competing against one of the greatest in our division and defeating him twice feels amazing,” he remarked.
He emphasized that the victory held significant meaning for him and his team.
“It means everything. Each fight is the most important one for me. My team and I accomplished it again,” he stated.
Having been born in Myanmar and spending time in a refugee camp in Malaysia before relocating to Houston, Van noted that these experiences shaped his fighting spirit.
“Growing up in Myanmar inherently makes you a fighter. The journey to Malaysia was challenging, and moving from Malaysia to Houston was equally tough,” he explained.
“Everything transformed in just a few years, preparing me for all challenges,” he added.
Van also highlighted the importance of representing his heritage and country.
“Representing my homeland and Chin culture is paramount. There’s a connection; I was born in Myanmar. Even as a US citizen, my roots are in Myanmar, and I will always honor that,” he affirmed.
When asked about advice for aspiring fighters from Assam, Mizoram, and the Northeast who may lack access to training facilities, Van emphasized the importance of discipline and trust in their support systems.
“Focus on training and trust your coaches and those around you. We have a fighter from Mizoram competing in ONE Championship, proving that individuals from Mizoram, India, or anywhere can achieve greatness with hard work,” he advised.
“So, stay dedicated and focused,” he concluded.
