Exciting News for Formula 1 Fans

New Delhi [India] - On Friday, Formula 1 revealed that the Turkish Grand Prix will make its comeback to the FIA Formula One World Championship starting in 2027. The agreement with Turkey's Ministry of Youth and Sports ensures that Istanbul Park will be part of the racing calendar until 2031.

The Turkish Automobile Sports Federation (TOSFED) will act as the delivery partner for these upcoming events.

The last Turkish Grand Prix took place in 2020 and 2021, during which Lewis Hamilton clinched his seventh Drivers' Championship title in 2020, matching Michael Schumacher's legendary record.

Istanbul Park first entered the Formula 1 scene in 2005 and quickly gained a reputation for being one of the most technically challenging circuits. The 5.33-kilometer track features significant elevation changes that test both driver skill and vehicle performance.

One of the most notable features is the multi-apex Turn 8, which demands precision and commitment from drivers as they navigate its long, sweeping left-hander.

Valtteri Bottas was the last driver to win at Istanbul Park in 2021, driving for Mercedes. He, along with Sir Lewis Hamilton, is among the only two current drivers to have triumphed at this venue.

Turkey has hosted a total of nine Grands Prix, making it a beloved location for teams, drivers, and fans alike, known for its competitive racing. Brazilian driver Felipe Massa holds the record for the most wins at Istanbul Park, with three consecutive victories from 2006 to 2008 while racing for Ferrari. Other notable winners include Kimi Raikkonen, Sebastian Vettel, and Jenson Button.

President Recep Tayyip Erdogan expressed, “Formula 1 is one of the premier sporting events globally, known for its spectacle and a young, enthusiastic fan base. In Turkey, it enjoys widespread popularity across all age groups, especially among the youth, with nearly 19 million viewers and around 7.5 million followers on social media. We have hosted Formula 1 nine times: seven races from 2005 to 2011 and two during the pandemic in 2020 and 2021. Istanbul Park, famous for its Turn 8, will host five seasons of thrilling races from 2027 to 2031.”

Erdogan further stated, “Turkey's return to the Formula 1 calendar reflects the strong confidence in our organizational capabilities, modern sports infrastructure, and the renowned hospitality of the Turkish people. We will ensure a flawless organization, just as we have in the past, and I congratulate everyone involved in bringing Formula 1 back to our country.”

Stefano Domenicali, President and CEO of Formula 1, remarked, “We are thrilled to return to the vibrant city of Istanbul from 2027, providing excitement for our fans in Turkey and worldwide on one of the most challenging circuits. Istanbul serves as a cultural bridge between Europe and Asia, blending history with a modern approach to sports and entertainment. I extend my gratitude to President Erdogan, the Ministry of Youth and Sports, and TOSFED for their support in making this return possible.”

FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem added, “The return of Formula 1 to Turkey signifies the sport's ongoing global growth and appeal. Istanbul Park holds a special place in Formula 1 history, and its re-inclusion underscores our commitment to expanding the championship in dynamic markets.”

Eren Uclertopragi, President of TOSFED, expressed pride in securing the Turkish Grand Prix's return, thanking the government and FIA for their support. Preparations for the race in 2027 are already underway, aiming to deliver an event worthy of Turkey and Istanbul.
