Tragic Loss of Ghanaian Footballer Dominic Frimpong in Armed Robbery
Devastating Incident Shakes Ghanaian Football Community
The Ghanaian football scene is in mourning following the heartbreaking death of Dominic Frimpong, a Premier League player who was fatally shot during an armed robbery on April 12. This tragic event, confirmed by the Ghana Football Association, has left players, officials, and fans in shock as they grapple with the loss of such a young and talented athlete.
At just 20 years old, Frimpong was traveling with his team, Berekum Chelsea FC, after an away match when the attack occurred. Reports indicate that the team bus was ambushed by armed assailants, described as masked individuals carrying guns and assault rifles, forcing players and staff to seek refuge. In the ensuing chaos, many team members fled into nearby bushes as gunfire erupted, transforming a routine trip into a harrowing experience.
The attack took place around 10:30 PM local time on the Ahyiresu-Kwame Dwumor Sreso road in the Nyinahin District of Ghana’s Ashanti Region. Frimpong was hit by gunfire and was quickly transported to a hospital, where he tragically succumbed to his injuries.
Authorities have classified the incident as a violent criminal act involving theft, with another victim, George Owusu Afriyie, aged 52, reportedly robbed of 4,500.00 cedis (approximately $408). The police highlighted that multiple individuals were targeted during this robbery.
The Ghana Football Association expressed its sorrow over the incident, labeling it a significant loss not only for Berekum Chelsea but for Ghanaian football as a whole. They paid tribute to Frimpong, stating, “Dominic was a promising young talent whose dedication and passion for the game embodied the spirit of our league.”
Frimpong had recently joined Berekum Chelsea FC on loan from Aduana Stars FC and had already made a notable impact, participating in 13 matches and scoring two goals, showcasing his potential for a bright future.
His untimely passing has left teammates, club staff, and fans heartbroken. For many, he represented more than just a football player; he was a young man pursuing his dreams and establishing his place in the sport.
