Mumbai: The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is in mourning following the sudden passing of Ian William Langford, a seasoned broadcast engineer who was part of the Indian Premier League (IPL) production team in Mumbai for 2026.
In a formal announcement, the board conveyed, “The IPL Governing Council and all associated parties extend their heartfelt condolences on the unexpected loss of Mr. Ian Williams Langford, a devoted broadcast engineer who played a crucial role in our broadcasting efforts. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends during this challenging time.”
Reaffirming their dedication to those who work behind the scenes, the BCCI stated, “The IPL is committed to offering all necessary support to Mr. Langford’s family during this profoundly difficult period.” They also highlighted, “The health, safety, and overall well-being of every individual involved in the IPL's operations remain our top priority.”
Langford, a 76-year-old British national, was in Mumbai for IPL broadcasting duties and had been residing at the Trident Hotel since March 24.
As reported by the Marine Drive police, hotel personnel discovered him unresponsive in his room on the morning of March 30 after several unsuccessful attempts to reach him. The hotel management promptly transported him to Bombay Hospital, where he was declared dead upon arrival.
Preliminary investigations revealed no indications of foul play. Marine Drive police officials noted that the autopsy did not uncover anything suspicious. Nevertheless, they have registered a case of unnatural death, and further investigations are underway.
Langford had returned to his hotel room late on March 29 after completing his work at an IPL match. When he failed to respond the following morning, hotel staff alerted the authorities, leading to the tragic discovery. Langford was a highly skilled professional, regarded as an essential member of the broadcast team, ensuring seamless coverage of IPL matches.
