Tragic Incident Shadows Argentina vs Egypt Match at FIFA World Cup
A Heartbreaking Turn of Events
The match between Argentina and Egypt at the FIFA World Cup was nothing short of dramatic, with the reigning champions staging a remarkable comeback to secure victory. While fans in Argentina celebrated, a family in Bangladesh faced a devastating loss. Mohammad Shariful Islam, aged 38, tragically lost his life allegedly at the hands of local Argentina supporters following a minor dispute during the game. Shariful, a supporter of Brazil, was rooting for Egypt when he mocked the Argentina fans after Egypt initially took the lead and Lionel Messi missed a penalty. This provoked a confrontation at a local tea shop, as reported by Prothomalo. Shariful, who worked as an auto rickshaw driver, was attacked and later succumbed to his injuries.
In the aftermath, Shariful's wife, Beauty Banu, expressed her grief, stating, “How can people kill someone over a football match? I have two daughters. Who will they call father now? My two daughters have become orphans. I want the harshest punishment for those who killed my husband. I am a poor and helpless woman. How will I raise my two daughters now? My entire family has been destroyed.”
Authorities are currently working to apprehend those responsible, although no formal complaint has been lodged by Shariful's family as of yet. Reports suggest that the families of the accused are attempting to resolve the situation by offering financial compensation to Shariful's family.
Controversy Surrounds the Match
The match itself has been labeled one of the most contentious of the World Cup. The Egyptian team expressed outrage over several contentious calls, including a disallowed goal. Argentina found themselves down 2-0 until the 79th minute, when they scored three goals in quick succession to clinch a thrilling victory. The Egyptian camp has alleged that the match was manipulated to favor Lionel Messi.
