Torrance Launches New Pickleball Courts to Meet Growing Demand
New Pickleball Courts Under Construction in Torrance
In Torrance, California, a new project to construct pickleball courts at Wilson Park has officially commenced, driven by the increasing popularity of the sport in the area. The $1.5 million initiative, which kicked off on March 19, is anticipated to be finished by June.
City officials have noted that this development is part of a larger trend. Krystle Covarrubias, the senior business manager for the Community Services Department, stated, “Pickleball has rapidly become one of the most popular recreational activities across the country, appealing to individuals of all ages and skill levels.”
She further explained that the local demand for court space has surged, resulting in overcrowding at shared facilities and numerous requests from residents for more playing opportunities. The new courts aim to alleviate these issues.
“The establishment of dedicated pickleball courts will help meet the rising demand, enhance court availability throughout the city, and enrich recreational options for the community,” Covarrubias added.
Moreover, these specialized facilities will foster inclusive programming, encourage active lifestyles, and align with the city’s objectives to broaden access to modern recreational amenities.
Originating in the U.S. in 1965, pickleball has gained immense global popularity, with new courts emerging across various continents. What started as a leisurely activity has transformed into a worldwide phenomenon, attracting players of all ages and abilities.
The sport's appeal lies in its simplicity, accessibility, social nature, and promotion of a healthy lifestyle. Since the onset of the pandemic, participation in pickleball has surged. The United States has seen a staggering 263.5% increase in players since 2014, with an annual growth rate of 85.7% since the pandemic began. Consequently, the demand for pickleball courts has skyrocketed, prompting the conversion of existing tennis courts into pickleball facilities.
