Tim Southee Believes Kohli and Rohit Can Extend Careers Until 2027 World Cup
Tim Southee's Insights on Kohli and Rohit's Future
Renowned New Zealand fast bowler Tim Southee has expressed that if Indian cricket icons Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma maintain their exceptional batting performances, they could potentially extend their careers to the 2027 ODI World Cup.
Kohli has stepped back from T20 and Test formats but is currently in remarkable form, having scored consecutive centuries in the ongoing three-match ODI series against South Africa. Meanwhile, Rohit has also showcased his prowess with a century and a half-century in his last three matches.
Leading the Sharjah Warriors, Southee shared his thoughts with the media during the fourth season of ILT20, stating, 'Kohli is arguably the best ODI batsman ever, and if he continues to perform, why not?' He added, 'Rohit recently scored a century in Australia, so both are still delivering. As long as they contribute to the team, age is just a number in my opinion.'
As both players approach the age of 39 by the time of the 2027 World Cup, discussions about their future continue. Southee remarked, 'It's their decision. If they believe they can still meet the demands of playing at the highest level, then why not?'
He further emphasized, 'As I mentioned, you have Virat Kohli, who is perhaps the best ODI batsman ever, and if he is available for the World Cup, I believe the team would want him to play.' Recently, India faced a historic 0-2 defeat at home against South Africa in a Test series, marking their first loss in 25 years. The retirements of Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and Ravichandran Ashwin have accelerated a transitional phase in Indian cricket.
Southee did not view India's loss as overly concerning, stating, 'India has lost a lot of experience. They are now in a phase of rebuilding the team. When we visited, they had a very experienced squad.'
He concluded, 'However, when you remove Rohit, Ashwin, and Kohli, you lose a wealth of experience and knowledge. Therefore, I believe it is now a time for other players to develop. This might just be a transitional phase for them.'
