The Rise of Pickleball Among Delhi's Legal Community
Pickleball's Growing Popularity
Pickleball has quickly gained immense popularity, appealing to a wide audience. Unlike many sports that are primarily enjoyed as spectator events, pickleball attracts players eager to engage in physical activity and improve their fitness levels. Its charm lies in its simplicity, requiring no extensive technical skills and being easily accessible to everyone.
In Delhi, the legal community has particularly embraced pickleball, transforming the demanding nature of their profession into a more playful and engaging environment. Senior lawyers are now showcasing a lighter side through this sport.
Sanjivani Pattjoshi's Journey
Sanjivani Pattjoshi, a Supreme Court litigation lawyer, took up pickleball three years ago. With a background in tennis and badminton, she found pickleball to be a refreshing alternative, especially given the limited availability of courts for her preferred sports. Recently, she triumphed in the LawStrings Pickleball League in New Delhi, representing the Pahwa Panthers.
"I've played various sports throughout my life. While I wouldn't claim pickleball is the ultimate solution for burnout, I believe any sport can serve as an excellent stress reliever. For that hour spent playing, you can disconnect from everything else and focus solely on the game," she shared.
Accessibility and Economic Factors
While Sanjivani acknowledges that pickleball isn't necessarily easier than other sports, its accessibility has contributed to its rising popularity. She noted, "Many of my friends are more inclined to try pickleball due to its ease of access. Other sports like badminton or tennis often require a certain level of stamina, which can be a barrier for beginners."
Moreover, the economic aspect plays a significant role. Unlike golf, which can be prohibitively expensive, pickleball offers a more affordable entry point. Renting equipment costs around 100 rupees per hour, making it accessible to a broader demographic, including those in tier-two cities.
The Community Aspect
With numerous pickleball courts available in various localities, players can easily find opportunities to engage in the sport. Sanjivani highlighted the convenience of booking courts through apps, which enhances the overall experience.
She expressed her preference for pickleball over badminton, citing the lack of available courts for the latter in Delhi. The rise of pickleball has allowed her to connect with fellow players effortlessly, fostering a sense of community.
Benefits of Playing Pickleball
Playing pickleball has significantly improved Sanjivani's endurance and helped alleviate stress. She explained, "In litigation, being constantly on your feet is essential. While some days are spent in the office, others require running around. My endurance has noticeably increased over the past three years."
She emphasized the importance of dedicating time to oneself, stating that taking an hour for pickleball three times a week has positively impacted her productivity and motivation in her demanding career.
Building a Stronger Community
The LawStrings and the Delhi High Court Bar Association (DHCBA) have been instrumental in promoting pickleball among lawyers, organizing tournaments that attract participants from various levels of experience.
Sanjivani noted the growth of the LawStrings Pickleball League, which has become a platform for lawyers to compete and connect. The increasing diversity of participants has enriched the community, allowing for interactions across different career stages.
"It's refreshing to see senior advocates engaging in playful competition, which humanizes our profession," she concluded.
