Fritz Claims Victory Over Jodar

Washington, Aug 4: Taylor Fritz emerged victorious against Rafael Jodar, a first-time ATP 500 finalist, with a score of 7-6(2), 6-4, marking his 11th ATP Tour title and his first win at a level above ATP 250 in almost four years during the DC Open.

Following a rain delay that postponed the final, both players showcased strong serving in the initial set. However, Fritz's superior return game in the tie-break allowed him to capitalize on Jodar's errors and take the lead. The third seed maintained his momentum at the beginning of the second set, quickly establishing a 3-0 advantage.

In the second set, Fritz displayed impressive depth in his groundstrokes, striking decisively whenever Jodar presented an opportunity. This victory made him only the second American to win the Washington trophy since 2008, joining the ranks of 2024 champion Sebastian Korda.

In a tense final game, Fritz saved a break point and ultimately secured the win on his fifth match point after one hour and 49 minutes of play. Overcome with emotion, he collapsed to the ground after his victory but quickly rose to celebrate with the enthusiastic home crowd, as reported by DC Open.

The former World No. 4 improved his ATP Head2Head record against Jodar to 2-0 and became the eighth player this season to win an ATP Tour title after saving a match point during the tournament. Following this win, Fritz ascended two spots to No. 8 in the ATP Live Rankings and is set to compete in Montreal for the sixth ATP Masters 1000 event of the year.

Jodar, at just 19 years old, has made his debut in the Top 20 after a remarkable week. This was only his second tour-level final, having previously won his first ATP Tour title in Marrakech in April. His performance in Washington has also elevated him to 11th place in the ATP Live Race To Turin.

The young Spaniard aims to become the third player, following Stefanos Tsitsipas and Carlos Alcaraz, to qualify for the ATP Finals a year after participating in the Next Gen ATP Finals.

“It was a really tough final, and you are having an amazing season. At 19, in your first season on Tour, what you and your dad are doing is just incredible,” Fritz remarked to Jodar. “You are so young and are only going to get so much better.”
