Serena Williams Makes Exciting Return to Tennis at WTA Queen's Club Championship
Serena Williams Returns to the Court
On June 9, Serena Williams is set to make her long-awaited return to tennis after a four-year hiatus, participating in the first round of the WTA Queen's Club Championship in London. The 44-year-old tennis icon will team up with 19-year-old Victoria Mboko from Canada for the women's doubles event. This unseeded duo will face the third-seeded pair of Erin Routliffe from New Zealand and Nicole Melichar-Martinez from the USA. Their match is scheduled to take place at the prestigious Andy Murray Arena, the main court of the renowned tennis venue.
Williams last competed in professional tennis during the 2022 US Open, where she played in both singles and doubles. In singles, she was eliminated in the third round by Australia's Ajla Tomljanović, while in doubles, she partnered with her sister Venus, but they were knocked out in the first round by the Czech duo of Linda Nosková.
With an impressive tally of 24 singles, 13 doubles, and 2 mixed doubles Grand Slam titles, Serena is often hailed as the greatest tennis player in history, regardless of gender. Reflecting on her return, she stated, "Why not? For lack of a better explanation. I’ve had enough pressure. For me right now, it’s really just about ... my kids getting to see me play. Olympia is a little bit older, Adira is very young, but it’s also still moments like that. It's also just, an athlete is like the best thing that you can be in the highest place. Having an opportunity to still be able to possibly do that one last time is kind of cool and exciting."
