Paris, May 25: Novak Djokovic faced a tough challenge in his opening match at Roland Garros, ultimately overcoming French player Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard with a score of 5-7, 7-5, 6-1, 6-4 to secure his spot in the second round.

This year marks Djokovic's record-setting 82nd appearance in the Grand Slam main draw, surpassing the previous record he shared with Roger Federer and Feliciano Lopez. With this victory, he improves his record to 80 wins and only 2 losses in first-round matches at Grand Slam events, having not lost an opening match since the 2006 Australian Open.

On clay, Djokovic boasts an impressive 22-0 record in first-round matches, making him the only male player in the Open era to achieve such a feat at Roland Garros without a loss. Additionally, he remains undefeated against French competitors in Paris, holding a 13-0 record.

Next, Djokovic will aim to extend his flawless record against French players when he faces Valentin Royer.

Initially down a set against the powerful-serving Perricard in their first-ever matchup, Djokovic showed signs of frustration. He struggled to break Perricard's serve in the first set, where a break at 5-5 allowed the Frenchman to become the first player in 14 years to win a set against Djokovic in Paris.

Despite facing nine break points in the second set, Djokovic managed to save three set points at 5-6 with aces, ultimately converting on a crucial fourth set point. He executed a delicate drop shot that Perricard could not return effectively, allowing Djokovic to level the match.

Once back on equal terms, Djokovic broke Perricard's serve three additional times, decisively moving past the challenge and securing his advancement to the second round with a final score of 5-7, 7-5, 6-1, 6-4 after 2 hours and 51 minutes.
