London, July 13: Defending champion Jannik Sinner successfully retained his Wimbledon title by overcoming French Open winner Alexander Zverev with a score of 6-7(7), 7-6, 6-3, 6-4 in a thrilling final held at the center court on Sunday.
This victory marks Sinner's second consecutive triumph at the All England Club and adds a fifth Grand Slam title to his collection. At just 24 years old, he has now achieved a remarkable 10 consecutive victories against Zverev, although his streak of 14 straight sets won against the German came to an end when he lost the first-set tiebreak.
Zverev, aged 29, aimed to secure his second major title but fell short once more against the world's top-ranked player. His record against No. 1 players in Grand Slam events now stands at 0-7. Sinner clinched the championship with a spectacular crosscourt backhand winner following a Zverev drop shot, finishing the match with a powerful forehand winner down the line. Following his victory, the Italian celebrated by collapsing onto the grass and sharing an embrace with Zverev at the net.
After narrowly losing the first set in a tightly contested tiebreak, Sinner displayed remarkable composure to take the second set in another tiebreak before dominating the match. His relentless baseline play, exceptional returning, and calm demeanor were crucial in securing the most significant title of his career.
Despite Zverev serving 17 aces and achieving an 80 percent first serve rate, Sinner proved to be more effective in critical moments. The Italian won 80 percent of his first serve points, 68 percent on his second serve, converted two out of five break-point chances, and excelled from the baseline, winning 43 receiving points compared to Zverev's 34.
In total, Sinner accumulated 145 points against Zverev's 130 and won 25 games throughout the match, highlighting his consistency in the over three-hour contest.
This victory not only marks Sinner's second Wimbledon title but also solidifies his position as one of the leading figures in tennis, while Zverev continues to seek his first Grand Slam title despite another commendable performance on a grand stage.
