Toronto, Aug 14: Iga Swiatek has successfully ended her nearly year-long wait for a title by defeating Elena Rybakina to secure the women's singles championship at the Canadian Open.

The eighth-ranked player from Poland had not reached a final or won a title since her victory in Seoul last September. However, she showcased an impressive performance in Toronto, achieving a convincing 6-2, 6-3 victory over World No. 2 Rybakina in just 75 minutes, marking her first title of the current season and the 26th of her career.

This win also signifies her 12th WTA 1000 title, surpassing Aryna Sabalenka (11) for the second-most titles since the format's inception in 2009, trailing only Serena Williams (13).

Entering Toronto, Swiatek's 2026 season had not met her usual high standards, as she had not reached any finals, dropped to No. 8 in the world rankings, and was on the edge of missing the WTA Finals. Her confidence seemed to be wavering as well.

On her path to the title, Swiatek defeated four Top 20 players (Rybakina, Svitolina, Shnaider, Kostyuk), marking the first time since her 2024 Roland-Garros win that she has triumphed over three or more top-ranked opponents in a single tournament.

“We all strive for these moments, and I was definitely missing it a bit. I'm pleased that I remained focused on improving and grinding because that’s what matters most. This week, my tennis really clicked, along with my physicality and mental preparation. It has been the best week of the season so far,” Swiatek expressed during her press conference after breaking her title drought.

With her victory in Toronto, Swiatek has now won all five major North American titles: Indian Wells (2022, 2024), Miami (2022), US Open (2022), Cincinnati (2025), and Canada (2026).

She is also three-quarters of the way to achieving a Career Slam, with only the Australian Open title eluding her. Swiatek has claimed eight out of the 10 available WTA 1000 titles, with Dubai and Wuhan being the only two she has yet to win.

In total, Swiatek boasts 19 significant titles, including four Roland Garros, US Open, Wimbledon, WTA Finals, three Rome titles, two Doha titles, two Indian Wells titles, as well as victories in Beijing, Canada, Cincinnati, Madrid, and Miami.

Despite not securing her third title of the season, Rybakina will still ascend to the top of the WTA race. She exits Toronto as the leader in hard court wins (26) and WTA 1000 victories (22).
