Cincinnati, Aug 20: Frances Tiafoe achieved a significant milestone at the Cincinnati Open by defeating second seed Felix Auger-Aliassime with a score of 6-3, 6-4, securing his place in the quarter-finals of a Masters 1000 event for the second time this season.
This marks the first occasion in Tiafoe's career where he has reached multiple Masters 1000 quarter-finals within a single season, having previously made it to the last eight in Miami.
Tiafoe took advantage of Auger-Aliassime's unusual mistakes, as the Canadian player recorded 37 unforced errors compared to Tiafoe's 16. Despite only managing to land 44 percent (28/64) of his first serves, Tiafoe demonstrated his dominance from the baseline, making it back to the Cincinnati quarter-finals for the first time since 2024, when he reached the final.
Next, Tiafoe will face 10th seed Lorenzo Musetti, who earlier defeated Portuguese qualifier Jaime Faria 7-5, 6-2 in a match lasting 75 minutes. This victory marks Musetti's first quarter-final appearance at a Masters 1000 event since last year's Rome tournament.
In another match, Tommy Paul pulled off a stunning upset against Alexander Zverev in a fourth-round quarter-final, saving a match point to eliminate the top seed.
Paul has now secured his place in his 50th tour-level quarter-final and will compete against Flavio Cobolli for a chance to reach the semi-finals in Ohio. Cobolli, the seventh seed, previously defeated the in-form Rafael Jodar with a score of 4-6, 7-6(3), 6-3.
Additionally, 21st seed Arthur Fils triumphed over world No. 8 Alex de Minaur with a score of 6-3, 6-4, becoming only the second French player to reach five Masters 1000 quarter-finals in a single season, following Jo-Wilfried Tsonga's achievement in 2012.
Lastly, sixth seed Taylor Fritz comfortably defeated Christopher O'Connell 6-4, 6-3, marking his return to the Cincinnati quarter-finals for the first time since 2023. With this victory, Fritz became the fourth American man to reach at least three Cincinnati quarter-finals this century, joining the ranks of Andy Roddick, Mardy Fish, and John Isner.
