Auqib Nabi's Impressive Journey to IPL 2026 with Delhi Capitals

Auqib Nabi, a talented pacer from Jammu and Kashmir, is making waves as he joins the Delhi Capitals for IPL 2026 after an impressive Ranji Trophy season. With 60 wickets at an average of 12.65, Nabi's skills have caught the attention of IPL franchises. Coach Hemang Badani believes in his potential, seeing him as a key player not just in the new ball phase but also during crucial slog overs. As the IPL season approaches, the pressure of his ₹8.4 Crore price tag raises questions about how he will perform. The Capitals are set to face the Lucknow Super Giants in their opening match, making this a highly anticipated debut for Nabi.

Auqib Nabi's Stellar Performance in Domestic Cricket

Auqib Nabi, a fast bowler from Jammu and Kashmir, is set to make his mark in the Indian Premier League (IPL 2026) following an outstanding season in the Ranji Trophy. He achieved remarkable success, taking 60 wickets across 17 innings with an impressive average of 12.65, playing a crucial role in leading Jammu and Kashmir to their inaugural Ranji Trophy title. Although primarily recognized as a red-ball bowler, Nabi's performance in white-ball cricket is commendable. In 34 T20 matches for Jammu and Kashmir, he has secured 43 wickets at an average of 21.81, with a strike rate of 16.9 and an economy rate of 7.74. His performance in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy was also noteworthy, where he claimed 15 wickets in 7 matches, showcasing his all-round capabilities, which caught the attention of IPL franchises, culminating in a ₹8.4 Crore bid from the Delhi Capitals (DC).

Delhi Capitals' Confidence in Nabi

Despite some skepticism regarding the steep bid, DC's coach Hemang Badani believes in Nabi's potential. He has been monitoring Nabi for over two years and noted his impressive development while training with a fast bowler associated with him at a previous team. Badani emphasized that the Delhi Capitals view Nabi not only as a new-ball bowler but also as a valuable asset during the slog overs. He pointed out that Nabi's white-ball statistics may not fully reflect his capabilities, stating, “I see him taking wickets up top — very clear on his role for us. He will be an option in the death overs too. If you look at his white-ball record, it has gone under the radar. He has the skills.”

Handling Pressure in IPL 2026

The Indian Premier League presents unique challenges, and while domestic experience is beneficial, it doesn't guarantee success. The hefty price tag can also influence player performance. Badani expressed confidence in Nabi's ability to manage the pressure, although he acknowledged that it ultimately depends on the individual. He remarked, “I would like to answer by saying no. But we have seen in the past that players do get affected by it. It is up to the individual.” The Delhi Capitals are set to kick off their IPL 2026 campaign against the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) on Wednesday, April 1, 2026, at the Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Cricket Stadium in Lucknow.
