Madrid, May 1: Alexander Zverev showcased his remarkable form at the ATP Masters 1000 event in Madrid, defeating Flavio Cobolli with a score of 6-1, 6-4 at the Manolo Santana Stadium, securing his spot in the semi-finals.
In a match lasting 90 minutes, Zverev became only the fourth player to reach the semi-finals in each of the first four Masters 1000 tournaments of the season since the series' inception in 1990, joining the ranks of Roger Federer (2006), Rafael Nadal (2010, 2011), and Jannik Sinner (2026).
With this victory over Cobolli, Zverev improved his ATP head-to-head record against him to 3-1 and achieved his 179th tour-level win on clay, surpassing Philipp Kohlschreiber for the most by a German player in the Open Era.
The world number three dominated the match, only facing a real challenge once when he served at 5-4 in the second set. Zverev had to fend off two break points, which he handled expertly with powerful serves to close out the match.
Next, Zverev aims to maintain his perfect 3-0 record in Madrid semi-finals against 21-year-old Belgian Alexander Blockx, who reached his first Masters 1000 semi-final by defeating defending champion Casper Ruud 6-4, 6-4.
This upcoming match will feature a stark contrast; while Blockx is making his debut in the last four of an ATP tournament, Zverev is competing in his seventh semi-final in the last eight Masters 1000 events. The German has previously triumphed at the Mutua Madrid Open twice (2018, 2021) and is now just two matches away from claiming the title again.
