Team India Dominates Afghanistan with Record 402 Runs in Second ODI

In a thrilling display of batting, Team India scored 402 runs against Afghanistan in the second ODI, led by Shubman Gill's 154 and Ishan Kishan's 125. Despite the impressive total, fans expressed disappointment over a late collapse that prevented an even higher score. This match marks India's eighth instance of crossing the 400-run mark in ODIs, equaling South Africa's record. As they prepare for the upcoming ODI series and the 2027 World Cup, the team's ability to capitalize on strong starts will be crucial.

India's Batting Prowess on Display

In a stunning performance, Team India's batting lineup, spearheaded by Shubman Gill and Ishan Kishan, overwhelmed Afghanistan's bowling attack during the second ODI of the three-match series at the Ekana Cricket Stadium in Lucknow on June 17.

Opting to bat first after losing the toss, India amassed a formidable total of 402 runs in just 49.5 overs. Gill showcased his skills with a remarkable 154 runs off 110 balls, featuring 22 boundaries and 2 sixes, achieving a strike rate of 140.00. He partnered with Kishan, who contributed 125 runs off 79 balls, including 14 fours and 7 sixes, at an impressive strike rate of 158.23, forming a pivotal 224-run partnership for the third wicket.

India's Record of 400-Plus Scores

With this score, Team India has now crossed the 400-run threshold in ODIs on eight occasions, matching South Africa's record for the most instances of any team achieving this milestone in the 50-over format.

India's first 400-plus score came during the 2007 ODI World Cup against Bermuda, where they posted 413/5, led by Virender Sehwag's explosive 114 runs off 87 balls, supported by half-centuries from Sourav Ganguly, Yuvraj Singh, and Sachin Tendulkar.

Since then, India has recorded seven additional scores exceeding 400 runs, with the highest being 418/5 against the West Indies in Indore in 2011. Notably, six of these eight instances occurred on home turf, while the remaining two were achieved in Port of Spain and Chattogram.

Fans Express Disappointment Despite High Total

Despite the impressive total of 402, many fans took to social media, particularly X (formerly Twitter), expressing frustration over what they perceived as a missed opportunity for an even higher score.

Numerous fans voiced their disappointment regarding the late collapse of the middle and lower order, suggesting that India could have easily reached 450-500 runs but lost momentum after the Gill-Kishan partnership ended.

Comments included sentiments like, 'They lost momentum after Gill and Ishan got out,' and 'It was easy 450+ when Gill and Ishan were batting.'

Looking Ahead

Having already secured a 1-0 lead in the series following a seven-wicket victory over Afghanistan in a rain-affected match, Team India is focused on maintaining their momentum as they prepare for the upcoming ODI series leading to the 2027 World Cup, co-hosted by South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia.
