Plans for a Motorsport City in Tamil Nadu

On Thursday, Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay announced ambitious plans to create a dedicated motorsport city in Tamil Nadu. This initiative will feature a state-of-the-art racetrack designed to accommodate Formula 1, F2, F3, F4, and various other international racing events.

During a session in the state Assembly, he stated, "Chennai will see the establishment of an Olympic city alongside a Motorsport City aimed at hosting Formula 1 races. We will identify young talents in motorsport and provide them with training and racing opportunities to cultivate champions at both national and international levels."

Vijay emphasized that the development of world-class racing venues would not only enhance tourism but also stimulate the growth of specialized vehicle manufacturing industries, create jobs, and boost economic progress.

He pointed out Tamil Nadu's prominence in the production of two- and four-wheel vehicles, noting that many manufacturers view the state as their preferred location for new factories. He also highlighted the presence of motorsport manufacturing units in Coimbatore.

Key racing venues such as the Madras International Circuit in Irungattukottai, near Chennai, and the KARI Motor Speedway in Coimbatore currently host national F3 and F4 races.

Vijay mentioned that the new venue will incorporate training facilities aimed at discovering and developing local racing talent, providing them with opportunities to compete on both national and international platforms.

The Buddh International Circuit previously hosted the F1 Indian Grand Prix from 2011 to 2013, but the event was discontinued due to the Uttar Pradesh government's taxation policies, which categorized F1 as entertainment rather than a sport.

In June, the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports established a task force to oversee motorsport initiatives, with the goal of reinstating F1 racing in India by the end of 2028.
