On Monday, Tamil Nadu's Chief Minister Joseph Vijay extended warm wishes to chess enthusiasts as the world celebrated World Chess Day. He emphasized the state's rich history in chess and reiterated his administration's dedication to nurturing future champions.

Acknowledging Tamil Nadu's Chess Legacy

In a post shared on X, CM Vijay praised Tamil Nadu's significant role in Indian chess, highlighting the state's remarkable ability to produce top young Grandmasters. He stated, "On this World Chess Day, I send my best wishes to all chess players, coaches, and fans. Tamil Nadu has been a pioneer in producing the highest number of young Grandmasters in India. Starting with Viswanathan Anand, our first Grandmaster in 1988, we have seen young talents like Gukesh, Pragnananda, and Vaishali excel in international tournaments, bringing honor to our state. I wish them all the best today."

Encouraging Youth Participation

The Chief Minister urged the youth to take up chess and represent Tamil Nadu on the world stage. He remarked, "As Tamil Nadu emerges as a global chess hub, it is essential for the younger generation to master chess strategies, engage in international competitions, and elevate the prestige of Tamil Nadu and India. Our government is committed to supporting these efforts in every possible way."

Chennai: The Heart of Indian Chess

Chennai is recognized as the Chess Capital of India, contributing nearly one-third of the nation's rising chess talents. The city's vibrant chess community, comprising schools, academies, and clubs, has thrived since the emergence of Viswanathan Anand and continues to foster elite players.

Recent Achievements in Tamil Nadu Chess

The state's prowess in chess has been highlighted by the recent successes of reigning world champion Dommaraju Gukesh, Grandmaster Rameshbabu Praggnanandhaa, and Vaishali Rameshbabu, all of whom are from Tamil Nadu.

Praggnanandhaa's Triumph at Norway Chess

Last month, CM Vijay honored Praggnanandhaa at the Chief Secretariat in Chennai after he became the first Indian to win the prestigious Norway Chess title. The Chief Minister awarded him a cash prize of Rs 50 lakh from the Sports Development Authority of Tamil Nadu and even played a friendly chess match with him during the event.

Praggnanandhaa secured the Norway Chess 2026 title by defeating Germany's Vincent Keymer in the final round in Oslo. He outperformed a competitive field that included World No. 1 Magnus Carlsen, world champion D. Gukesh, Alireza Firouzja, Wesley So, and Keymer. His remarkable journey to the title featured four consecutive classical victories over Firouzja, Carlsen, Gukesh, and Keymer, including a notable double win against Carlsen.

Significance of World Chess Day

World Chess Day is celebrated on July 20 each year to commemorate the establishment of the International Chess Federation (FIDE) in Paris in 1924. The celebration was first initiated by FIDE in 1966 and received official recognition from the United Nations General Assembly in 2019.
