Panas Kuala Lumpur Open 2026 Overview

The Panas Kuala Lumpur Open 2026 is scheduled to take place from May 13 to 17, generating excitement around the participation of top players globally. Among them, 15-year-old Tama Shimabukuro is drawing significant attention as he embarks on his second season in the PPA Tour Asia, following an impressive showing at the Veolia Atlanta Pickleball Championships. Shimabukuro is expected to be a key player in singles, men's doubles, and mixed doubles events.

A Rapid Ascent

Shimabukuro's journey has been remarkable. Growing up in Hawaii, he was immersed in skateboarding, surfing, and freestyle activities. His talent was recognized early on by brands like Nike and RVCA. A pivotal moment occurred during a family visit to a pickleball court in California, where he casually began playing with paddles purchased from Target. This spontaneous activity soon evolved into a serious commitment.

His upbringing is evident in his playing style, particularly at the kitchen line, where he often relies on instinct and creativity. His mother, Tatum, described his approach as 'going with the flow and free-styling it,' a philosophy that continues to influence his game.

Breakthrough Moments

Asia first witnessed Shimabukuro's potential at the Sansan Fukuoka Open 2025, where he stunned the competition by defeating third seed Tyler Loong with scores of 11-5, 11-4. That day, he also partnered with Xiao Yi Wang‑Beckvall to upset Loong and Pei‑Chuan Kao in mixed doubles, marking a significant milestone in his career.

His subsequent performances in Fukuoka, Vietnam, Malaysia, and Hangzhou indicated consistent improvement. At the MB Hanoi Cup 2026, he reached the men’s singles quarterfinals and secured a fourth-place finish in men’s doubles, showcasing his ability to compete with seasoned professionals.

A Statement Performance

Shimabukuro's emergence was solidified at the Veolia Atlanta Pickleball Championships, where he entered as the No. 22 seed and made an impressive run to the final. He defeated former World No. 1 Federico Staksrud and top seed Hunter Johnson, gaining enthusiastic support from the crowd. Although Chris Haworth ultimately stopped him in the final, the match highlighted Shimabukuro's growing influence on elite-level strategies.

He also finished fourth in men’s doubles alongside Yuta Funemizu, further enhancing his reputation and fan base. His global PPA win percentage has surged from 48.9% in 2025 to 59.1% in 2026, reflecting his improved performance and consistency against higher-ranked players.

Heading into Kuala Lumpur

As the Panas Kuala Lumpur Open 2026 approaches, Shimabukuro has established himself as the top seed in men’s doubles with India's Armaan Bhatia and in mixed doubles with Alix Truong. He is seeded third in men’s singles, trailing Hien Truong and Hong Kit Wong. His transformation has been swift; just six months ago, he was exiting tournaments in the Round of 16, but now he is a player others are preparing to challenge.

Moreover, there is the potential for a historic achievement, as only one player in PPA Tour Asia history has completed a Triple Crown sweep. With his strong seeding across all three disciplines, Shimabukuro is in a position to pursue this remarkable feat. As Kuala Lumpur gears up for one of the most significant tournaments in the Asian sports calendar, it is clear that Tama Shimabukuro is evolving from a promising teenager into a prominent figure in the next generation of pickleball.
