Suryakumar Yadav and Shivam Dube Set to Boost Mumbai's Vijay Hazare Trophy Campaign
Mumbai's Star Players Confirm Participation
New Delhi: Suryakumar Yadav, the captain of India's T20I team, along with all-rounder Shivam Dube, has confirmed their availability for two upcoming matches in the Vijay Hazare Trophy, set for January 6 and 8.
Mumbai's journey in the 50-over tournament will kick off in Jaipur on December 24, with their first league match against Sikkim on Wednesday. According to a report from a leading news outlet, both Suryakumar and Dube are expected to participate in the matches against Himachal Pradesh on January 6 and Punjab on January 8.
An official from the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) stated, "Surya and Dube have notified us of their intention to play in the Vijay Hazare Trophy games on January 6 and 8. Their names will be included in the Mumbai squad. Regarding Rohit Sharma, he is currently set to play in two league matches."
Players who participated in India's recent 3-1 T20I series win over South Africa have been instructed to compete in at least two matches of the Vijay Hazare Trophy. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has emphasized this requirement to its contracted players, aiming to enhance involvement in domestic cricket.
Earlier this year, Ajit Agarkar, the chair of the selection committee, highlighted the necessity for international players to engage in domestic competitions whenever possible.
"We made it clear a year or two ago that players should participate in domestic cricket whenever they are available. This is crucial for maintaining sharpness and staying active in the game, especially during long breaks. Whether this is feasible with their international commitments is uncertain, but if players are free, they should be playing domestic cricket," Agarkar remarked.
The Indian T20I squad will have a break of nearly a month before reconvening in Nagpur for the first of five T20Is against New Zealand on January 21. This series will serve as their final preparation before India defends its T20 World Cup title against the USA at the renowned Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on February 7.
Meanwhile, Rohit and Mumbai's captain Shardul are anticipated to arrive in Jaipur on Monday and will participate in a practice session the following day. Mumbai's initial two matches in the tournament are against Sikkim on December 24 and Uttarakhand on December 26, both taking place in Jaipur.
