Sunrisers Hyderabad Faces Captaincy Challenge Ahead of IPL 2026

As the 2026 IPL season approaches, Sunrisers Hyderabad faces a significant captaincy dilemma due to uncertainties surrounding Pat Cummins' fitness. With Cummins' limited play since last year, the franchise is reportedly set to appoint Ishan Kishan as the new captain. Kishan's impressive performance in domestic cricket and his pivotal role in India's recent T20 World Cup victory have positioned him as a strong candidate. This article explores the implications of this leadership change for SRH as they prepare for the upcoming season.

Captaincy Uncertainty for SRH

Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) is currently grappling with a significant captaincy issue as the 2026 Indian Premier League (IPL) approaches, primarily due to uncertainties surrounding Pat Cummins' fitness. The Australian skipper has participated in just one competitive match since July of the previous year, which was during the Adelaide Test of the 2025-26 Ashes series. He missed four out of five matches in this high-profile series against England and was also sidelined from the 2026 T20 World Cup. Cummins sustained a back injury following the three-match Test series against the West Indies last year. Although he managed to play one Test during the Ashes, he later admitted that it was a risky decision given the series' significance. After Australia secured a series win by clinching the third Test, Cummins withdrew from the remaining matches to concentrate on his recovery. As of now, there is still no confirmation regarding his availability for IPL 2026 or his travel plans to India, prompting the franchise to seek a new captain.

Ishan Kishan Set to Lead SRH

Travis Head, who has occasionally captained Australia on a standby basis, and Abhishek Sharma, who has been with SRH since 2019, are both unlikely to take the helm for SRH in the upcoming IPL season. According to a report from a leading news outlet, Ishan Kishan is poised to assume the captaincy role. The report indicates that SRH management has deliberated on this decision, and the 27-year-old wicketkeeper-batter is expected to lead the team in his second season with the franchise. Kishan previously captained the Jharkhand team, which triumphed in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy this season, and he was the tournament's top run-scorer, helping his state secure the trophy for the first time ever. His outstanding performance earned him a return to the Indian national team after a two-year hiatus. The former Mumbai Indians star played a crucial role in India's victory at the 2026 T20 World Cup, amassing 317 runs in nine matches with an average of 35.22 and a strike rate of 193.29. He scored three half-centuries, including one against Pakistan and another in the final against New Zealand. Kishan was acquired by SRH during the 2025 IPL Mega Auction and made a remarkable debut with a century against the Rajasthan Royals. However, he experienced a dip in form afterward, concluding the season with 354 runs at an average of 35.40 across 13 matches, including one century and a notable 94-run innings against Royal Challengers Bengaluru.
