Sumit Kundu's Remarkable Comeback

Boxer Sumit Kundu has earned his place in the Indian boxing team following an impressive display at the selection trials for the Commonwealth Games and Asian Games. Kundu faced significant challenges in recent years, grappling with injuries that nearly led him to quit the sport. He suffered an ACL tear and a meniscus injury during the national championship while competing for a spot in the Paris Olympics, sidelining him for almost two years and ultimately preventing his participation in the event. However, he is now back on the path to winning medals. Competing for the Army, he triumphed over Deepak in the finals on Friday and previously defeated World Cup gold medalist Hitesh Gulia in the semifinals. "It took nearly two years for me to return, and I’m thrilled to have secured my selection," Sumit shared with the media after his match. After undergoing surgery and extensive rehabilitation in Mumbai for about a year and a half, he found the mental aspect of recovery to be even more challenging. "I contemplated quitting boxing at times, feeling as though my career was over due to the injury. After rehabilitation, I struggled to regain the same energy in my knees," he reflected.

Sumit also disclosed that he kept his injury a secret from his family until he spoke with his childhood coach, Ved Prakash, and other trainers, which helped him rebuild his confidence to return to the ring. Initially competing in the 75 Kg category, he has now transitioned to the 70 Kg category, which he feels suits him better. "When I began boxing, I competed around this weight. The ligament injury made it challenging to cut weight, but I’m finally excited to make a strong comeback," he expressed.
