Sumit Antil Sets New World Record at Indian Open Para Athletics Championship
Historic Achievement by Sumit Antil
Renowned Indian para-athlete Sumit Antil has once again made headlines by breaking the world record for the seventh time in his illustrious career. This remarkable feat occurred on May 27 during the 8th Indian Open Para Athletics Championship held at the prestigious Shree Kantaveera International Stadium in Bengaluru. Antil surpassed his own world record, which he had maintained for three years since the 2023 Asian Para Games in Hangzhou, where he achieved a throw of 73.29 meters. In a stunning performance today, the 27-year-old launched the javelin to an impressive distance of 74.82 meters in the F64 category. This achievement marks the seventh occasion on which Antil has set a new world record. He first became a world record holder in 2019 with a throw of 61.32 meters at the World Para Athletics Grand Prix in Italy. Subsequently, he broke the record three times while securing gold at the Tokyo Paralympics in 2021, with throws measuring 66.95 meters, 66.08 meters, and 62.88 meters. Later that same year, he set another world record with a throw of 68.62 meters at the Indian Open. Following his last record in Hangzhou, Antil clinched his second gold medal at the Paralympics in Paris 2024 with a throw of 70.59 meters. He has also triumphed at the World Championships three times, standing atop the podium in 2023 (Paris), 2024 (Kobe), and 2025 (New Delhi). It is important to note that today's world record will need to be ratified by World Para Athletics.
