Nagoya: Sujeet Kalkal showcased his dominance in the men's 65kg wrestling category by securing the gold medal at the Asian Games held in Nagoya on Friday. His path to victory included defeating an Olympic champion, marking a remarkable year of achievements.


Throughout the tournament, the 23-year-old athlete overcame formidable opponents, including strong contenders from Iran and Japan, leading many to believe he was destined for gold. However, he faced a tough challenge from Abdulmazhid Kudiev of Tajikistan.


Initially trailing 2-9, Sujeet executed an impressive comeback, scoring eight consecutive points to clinch a thrilling victory.


He began his journey by decisively defeating Afghanistan's Sayed Omar Zazai with a technical superiority score of 13-3. In the quarterfinals, he maintained his momentum against Iran's Abbas Ebrahimzadehsavadkouhi, winning without conceding a single point.


In the semifinals, Sujeet edged out Japanese Olympic champion Kotaro Kiyooka, winning 3-3 on criteria.
