Australia Takes Charge on Day 3 of the First Test

On October 11, during the third day of the first Test against South Africa at Kingsmead, Australia's vice-captain and star batter, Steve Smith, delivered a breathtaking catch at slip, thrilling his teammates.

By the end of Day 3, Australia had firmly established control, dismissing South Africa for 284 runs in 78 overs. They then began their second innings, scoring 27 runs without loss in just five overs, with openers Travis Head and Nic Maddinson contributing 11 and 10 runs, respectively, extending their overall lead to 139 runs.

Bowling Performance That Dismantled South Africa

The Australian bowling attack, led by captain Pat Cummins (3 wickets for 54 runs), along with Josh Hazlewood (2/54), Mitchell Starc (2/63), and Nathan Lyon (2/58), effectively dismantled the South African batting order, maintaining pressure throughout the day.

Steve Smith's Catch Stuns Teammates

As Australia dominated the match, Smith's exceptional reflexes in the slips became a highlight of the day. This remarkable moment occurred during the 54th over of South Africa's innings when Kyle Verreynne attempted a reverse sweep off Nathan Lyon's delivery.

Verreynne had to adjust his shot, and Smith, anticipating the move, swiftly dove to his right to execute a stunning one-handed catch, sending Verreynne back to the pavilion for 13 runs. His teammates were left in awe, with Marnus Labuschagne exclaiming, 'Far Out, Stevo Time. He’s Got Two.'

Nearby, Matt Renshaw celebrated enthusiastically, shouting, 'Oh My God, Smudge! Oh, My God!' as the Australian players gathered around Smith to celebrate.

Smith's Record-Breaking Fielding Feat

Earlier in the match, Smith had also taken a sharp catch to dismiss South African captain Temba Bavuma for just 3 runs. His performance at slip has proven invaluable for Australia in Test cricket, showcasing his remarkable anticipation and quick reflexes.

With his two catches against South Africa, Smith surpassed Joe Root's record of 220 catches, becoming the most successful non-wicketkeeper fielder in Test history. He now boasts 223 catches in 240 Test innings, averaging nearly one catch per innings.

Smith joins an elite group of non-wicketkeeper fielders who have taken over 200 catches in Test cricket, leading with an impressive average of 1.77 catches per match. Across all formats, he has accumulated 350 catches in 476 innings, making him the fourth non-wicketkeeper fielder to achieve this milestone.
