Sri Lanka's T20 World Cup Preparations Underway: Selector Insights
Selectors Assess Options for T20 World Cup
Upul Tharanga, the chief selector for Sri Lanka, has indicated that the selection committee is carefully evaluating their choices as the T20 World Cup approaches. He emphasized that while they are cautious about implementing major changes, discussions regarding the captaincy will occur after consulting with the coach to ensure the team's best interests are prioritized. Charith Asalanka, the regular T20 captain, is currently sidelined from the ongoing tri-series in Pakistan due to health issues. In his absence, former captain Dasun Shanaka has stepped in to lead the team.
Captaincy Considerations
Tharanga mentioned, "We need to consider our best options following this series," when asked about potential captaincy changes. He added, "With the World Cup approaching, we cannot afford to make too many drastic changes. After discussions with the coach, the selectors will determine what is best for the team."
Charith Asalanka's Current Form
This year, Asalanka has struggled with his batting performance, accumulating only 156 runs in 12 innings at a strike rate of 122. Tharanga noted, "Charith has not been scoring runs in T20s, and due to his illness, he had to return home. He suffered from a viral fever and body aches." The physio has indicated uncertainty regarding Asalanka's recovery timeline, prompting the selectors to make necessary adjustments.
Future Prospects for Asalanka
Despite his recent struggles, Tharanga expressed confidence in Asalanka's abilities, describing him as a talented player with significant experience. He stated, "Charith is a very skilled cricketer, and I believe he will play a crucial role for Sri Lanka in the upcoming T20 World Cup. We have witnessed his capability in the middle order, where he has single-handedly secured victories. He remains a key part of our World Cup strategy."
