Sri Lanka vs Afghanistan Cricket Series Postponed Amid Middle East Tensions

The cricket series between Sri Lanka and Afghanistan has been postponed due to escalating tensions in the Middle East, disrupting flight operations. Originally set for March, the series would have marked a historic first for Afghanistan hosting Sri Lanka. Both teams are now shifting focus to the upcoming ODI World Cup after disappointing performances in the T20 World Cup. Additionally, coaching changes have occurred, with Gary Kirsten taking over as Sri Lanka's head coach and Richard Pybus stepping in for Afghanistan.

Postponement of the Series

The upcoming white ball series featuring Sri Lanka and Afghanistan has been delayed due to escalating conflicts in the Middle East. Originally, the teams were set to compete in three T20 internationals and three One Day Internationals. The T20 matches were planned for March 13, 15, and 17 in Sharjah, while the ODIs were scheduled for March 20, 22, and 25 in Dubai. However, the ongoing unrest has disrupted flight operations, prompting the Sri Lanka cricket board to announce the postponement. A representative from Sri Lanka Cricket stated, “We had to cancel because of the flight situation... and the ongoing fighting in the region.” This series would have marked the first time Afghanistan hosted Sri Lanka in a bilateral contest.

Both teams had disappointing performances in the recent T20 World Cup, failing to reach the semi-finals, with Afghanistan not even advancing to the Super 8s. Following their lackluster showing, both sides are now focusing on the ODI World Cup, which is set to take place next year in South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia. The series would have provided an excellent opportunity for both teams to experiment and identify their best line-ups ahead of the World Cup.

Coaching Changes in Sri Lanka and Afghanistan

Gary Kirsten Takes the Helm for Sri Lanka

In a significant move following the T20 World Cup, Sri Lanka has appointed Gary Kirsten as their head coach for a two-year term. Kirsten takes over from Sanath Jayasuriya, who opted to resign after the team's disappointing performance in the tournament. With a wealth of experience and a history of success, Kirsten's leadership could provide a much-needed boost for the former World Champions.

Similarly, Afghanistan has also made a coaching change, parting ways with Jonathan Trott after the T20 World Cup. Trott had led Afghanistan to impressive results, including a strong showing in the 2023 World Cup and the T20 World Cup 2024. Following his departure, Richard Pybus has been appointed as the new head coach for the Afghanistan cricket team.
