Strategic Expansion of Pickleball in Castile and León

In Spain, pickleball is gaining traction as the Tennis Federation of Castile and León has introduced a comprehensive strategy aimed at enhancing the sport's presence in the region. This initiative includes training programs, club activities, and outreach to schools. The federation has announced the establishment of a Comprehensive Plan for the Implementation of Pickleball, which seeks to organize and strengthen the sport throughout the autonomous community. Officials emphasize that this initiative will prioritize training, educational efforts, and promotional activities to ensure sustainable growth for pickleball.

Having emerged as one of the fastest-growing sports in the United States, pickleball is now gradually making its mark in Spain, with the Castile and León Tennis Federation playing a pivotal role in its development.

As part of this strategy, the federation is involved in the IMC Pickleball Experience 2026 project, which aims to promote the sport through affiliated clubs nationwide. This project is open to registered clubs and plans to include up to 50 clubs across Spain by 2026, with Castile and León expected to host at least four events. Each participating club will organize a pickleball festival featuring tournaments in various categories, including men’s doubles, women’s doubles, mixed doubles, and under-14 doubles. These events will also feature fan zones with food trucks, live music, and entertainment to attract new audiences.

A significant aspect of the program is the development of infrastructure. Four pickleball courts will be constructed by specialists from Composan, and these courts will remain with the clubs after the events, allowing them to establish pickleball schools and promote the sport locally. The courts can also be modified for mini-tennis programs.

Additionally, the plan includes an educational initiative aimed at integrating pickleball into school curricula across the region. A specialized training program for physical education teachers will enable them to incorporate pickleball into their classes, helping students become familiar with the sport from a young age and encouraging their participation.

To enhance accessibility, the federation has introduced a promotional pickleball federation license priced at €20 annually. This license permits players to compete in tournaments organized in Castile and León and throughout Spain.

Training is another crucial element of the expansion plan. An RPP pickleball coaching course is scheduled for March 21 and 22 in Valladolid, offering Level 1, Level 2, and accelerated certification programs. This course is organized by José Luis Corujo, the president of the Castile and León Tennis Federation, and directed by Gabriel Cuadro. Furthermore, an RPT Tennis course will be held in Valladolid from May 22 to 24 in Covaresa, also offering Level 1, Level 2, and accelerated training, organized by Corujo and led by Luis Mediero.

With new infrastructure, educational initiatives, and coaching programs in place, officials are optimistic that pickleball will continue to grow in Castile and León as Spain embraces the sport.
