Introduction to the Championship

Spain is set to launch its first national youth pickleball tournament this month, with the Spanish Youth Pickleball Championship scheduled for June 27 and 28 in Arganda del Rey, located near Madrid. This event will take place at the Almanzor Pickleball Club and is organized by the Pickleball Committee of the Royal Spanish Tennis Federation (RFET). This initiative marks a pivotal moment in Spain's commitment to developing a structured pathway for young athletes in the sport.

Event Details and Registration

The championship will include competitions in men's doubles, women's doubles, and mixed doubles across the Under-14 and Under-18 age categories. Registration for the event will commence on June 1 at 10:00 a.m. and will remain open until June 19 via the RAQT.com platform, with entries accepted on a first-come, first-served basis.

Strategic Development of Pickleball

The launch of this tournament is part of RFET's broader strategy to enhance the foundation of pickleball in Spain, focusing on grassroots development. The federation aims to create a pyramid structure that supports young players at the base, allowing them to progress through various competitive levels.

Importance of Youth Competitions

Yasin Harrús, the president of the RFET Pickleball Committee, emphasized the significance of investing in youth competitions for the sport's long-term success. He stated, “Providing appropriate competitions and monitoring is crucial for nurturing our young athletes. We believe that investing in this stage is essential for achieving high performance and aspiring to reach the highest competitive levels in the near future.”

Growth of Pickleball in Europe

Pickleball has been steadily gaining popularity across Europe, with Spain emerging as a key market alongside the UK and France. The establishment of a national championship for junior players indicates a shift towards more organized competition structures within the country.

Venue and Future Prospects

Choosing Arganda del Rey as the venue reflects a broader initiative to promote the sport beyond major urban centers, bringing organized competitions to emerging hubs with increasing player participation. By introducing a national championship at the junior level, RFET aims to create a clearer pathway from grassroots involvement to elite competition, encouraging more young players to engage with the sport and providing a platform for existing players to showcase their skills in a structured setting.
