Sofia Sewing Shines at Sacramento Open with Triple Crown Victory
Sofia Sewing's Triumph at the Sacramento Open
Sofia Sewing showcased an exceptional performance at the 2026 Sacramento Open, where she achieved a remarkable triple crown during the Association of Pickleball Players (APP) second domestic event of the season in California. This tournament, which supported Shriners Children’s, introduced an innovative one-day Pro Invitational format, featuring 24 of the top players on the tour. The event successfully raised nearly $40,000 for the organization.
In the invitational, the top 12 male and female players were paired into six doubles teams, competing in a round-robin format before moving on to knockout rounds. In the men's final, Jack Munro and Richard Livornese triumphed over Max Manthou and Aidan Schenk. Meanwhile, in the women's final, Sofia Sewing and Megan Fudge defeated Jill Braverman and Emilia Schmidt to claim victory.
The men's singles competition was highly competitive, with many top seeds advancing to the later rounds. Fifth seed Patrick Kawka caused a significant upset by defeating fourth seed DeHeart in the quarterfinals and then overcoming top seed Camron to reach the final. There, he faced Ammar Wazir, who made a strong comeback after missing a large portion of the 2025 season. Wazir narrowly won the final in straight games, 9 and 7, earning his first gold medal since October 2025, while Dustin Boyer secured third place.
The women's singles draw featured several surprises. Roos van Reek achieved early upsets against Pretorius and Huynh before falling to top seed Sewing in the quarterfinals. Fourteenth seed Emilia Schmidt also made an impression by defeating third seed Oshiro before exiting at the same stage. Another notable upset occurred when second seed Kat Stewart, who had previously dominated Sewing in singles, was eliminated in the quarterfinals by Seone Mendez, opening up the draw for the medal rounds.
In the final, Sewing faced Mendez in a tightly contested match. The top seed maintained her composure in a deciding third game, edging out a 12-10 victory to secure the gold medal and complete her triple crown achievement at the event. Domenika Turkovic took home the bronze medal.
The Sacramento Open underscored the depth and unpredictability of the APP Tour, with emerging talents challenging established players across various categories. Sewing's consistent performances across different formats reaffirmed her status as one of the leading competitors on the circuit. With strong participation and the successful launch of the Pro Invitational, this event marked a significant advancement for the APP Tour as it continues to enhance its competitive framework and global visibility.
