Smaran Ravichandran's Insights from IPL 2026
Smaran Ravichandran shared his experiences with Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) during the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026, highlighting it as a significant learning opportunity. He noted that the team's fearless style of play greatly influenced his understanding of cricket.
Learning from the Best: Smaran's IPL Journey
Currently leading the Shivamogga Yodhas in the Maharaja Trophy 2026, Smaran participated in six matches for SRH in the IPL season. Despite a modest performance, accumulating only 19 runs in four innings, he emphasized the value of sharing the dressing room with renowned players like Ishan Kishan, Travis Head, and Pat Cummins.
In a conversation, Smaran remarked, "Observing their gameplay was enlightening. It reshaped my perspective on cricket and inspired me to emulate their performance. This was my inaugural IPL experience, and I learned a lot from it."
He acknowledged that his start in the IPL wasn't ideal but expressed optimism about improving his T20 skills for the next season.
Success in Ranji Trophy and Learning from KL Rahul
Smaran had an impressive Ranji Trophy 2025-26 season, emerging as the top run-scorer with 950 runs in 14 innings at an average of 86.36. He had the opportunity to play alongside KL Rahul, the Indian wicketkeeper-batter, who participated in four matches for Karnataka.
Smaran described sharing the dressing room with Rahul as a remarkable experience, praising him as a respected senior player who consistently excels at the international level. He noted that Rahul's presence significantly strengthened their batting lineup.
"Having KL Rahul in the team was a tremendous boost. He is a role model for many, having proven himself repeatedly on the international stage. His return to Karnataka for the Ranji Trophy was invaluable," Smaran stated.
He also mentioned that discussions with Rahul about batting strategies were instrumental in helping Karnataka reach the Ranji Trophy final, despite ultimately losing to Jammu & Kashmir.
Advice from KL Rahul
Smaran highlighted that Rahul encouraged him to maintain a positive mindset and apply pressure on the opposition from the start. He said, "Rahul advised me to stay aggressive and keep the pressure on the opponents, which I implemented in my innings. His guidance to remain energetic at the crease was crucial for my performance."
Kumar Sangakkara: A Lasting Inspiration
Smaran revealed that Sri Lankan cricket legend Kumar Sangakkara has been his idol since childhood. Although he did not have the chance to meet him during his time at SRH, he continues to admire him greatly.
"Kumar Sangakkara has always been my cricketing inspiration. I didn't get to meet him this year, but he remains someone I look up to and would love to converse with," he expressed.
Challenges as Maharaja Trophy Captain
As captain of the Shivamogga Yodhas, Smaran has faced challenges, with the team currently positioned fifth in the standings, having secured only two victories out of six matches.
