Singapore to Develop 50 New Courts for Pickleball and Badminton
Expansion of Sports Facilities in Singapore
Singapore plans to construct 50 multipurpose courts dedicated to pickleball and badminton over the next five years, capitalizing on the growing interest in these sports. Currently, one facility is already operational. According to a report from a local news outlet, these new courts are part of the Sports Facilities Master Plan (SFMP), a long-term strategy aimed at enhancing access to quality sports infrastructure and promoting greater participation in physical activities.
Earlier this year, eight dual-purpose courts were inaugurated at The Kallang, with an additional eight pickleball courts set to open soon at the Little India bus terminal. Acting Minister for Culture, Community and Youth, David Neo, stated, “Our facilities are heavily utilized, attracting over 20 million visitors each year. As more Singaporeans adopt active lifestyles, the demand for public sports facilities, especially for badminton and pickleball, has surged during peak hours.”
Noise management is also a priority, as there have been concerns regarding the noise levels associated with pickleball, leading to complaints from nearby residents. Under the SFMP, new regional sports centers in Queenstown, Hougang, and Punggol are anticipated to be completed within the next year, as noted by Mr. Neo.
In addition to infrastructure development, the government is intensifying efforts to enhance sports accessibility for youth. The Ministry of Culture, Community and Youth (MCCY) plans to collaborate with Sport Singapore (SportSG) and the Ministry of Education (MOE) to create more opportunities for students to engage in sports and foster social interaction among diverse student groups.
Neo emphasized, “We aim to provide more platforms for children to play, nurturing their passion for sports so that every child can learn valuable lessons about themselves and others.” To support this initiative, a S$10 million (approximately US$7.83 million) grant has been introduced to promote the establishment of Multi-School Co-Curricular Activity (CCA) teams that will train and compete together outside of traditional school teams. Each team will receive S$200,000 over four years, which can be utilized for facility costs, transportation, or coaching expenses.
