Sibu Emerges as a Key Hub for Pickleball Development in Asia
Sibu's Ambitious Plans for Pickleball
As the popularity of pickleball surges across Asia, the Malaysian town of Sibu is positioning itself as a significant player in this growth, aiming to become a central hub for the sport's development. With strong governmental backing, expansion at the school level, and a robust infrastructure initiative, the Sibu Pickleball Association (SPA) is implementing a comprehensive strategy to integrate pickleball into the local sports culture.
Central to this vision is the planned Bukit Lima Pickleball Arena, a two-story facility that will feature eight dedicated courts for the sport. This project has garnered support from the Sibu Municipal Council and the Sarawak Sports Corporation, and it has successfully passed the Sibu Divisional Development Committee's initial review. The proposal is currently awaiting final approval from the Sarawak Land and Survey Department before moving on to the Sarawak Government Building Design Committee and the Sarawak Planning Authority for construction clearance.
A significant boost for the arena's development came when Joseph Chieng, the Bukit Asek assemblyman and SPA president, allocated RM5.8 million from the Rural Transformation Project fund for the first phase of construction. While the arena is a prominent symbol of Sibu's ambitions, the groundwork being laid in schools may have an even more profound impact on the sport's future in the area.
On April 30, 2025, the SPA initiated pickleball clubs in 11 secondary schools within the Sibu district, providing equipment sponsorships to support the program. Shortly after, two more schools joined, bringing the total to 13 participating institutions. The association also hosted the inaugural Sibu Division Inter-Secondary Schools Pickleball Championship, believed to be Malaysia's first competition of its kind, featuring 16 teams from 13 schools and showcasing the rapid growth of interest in pickleball among youth.
The momentum is expected to continue, with the second edition of the Sibu Division Inter-Secondary School Pickleball Championship already scheduled for July 4-5 at the SMI Pickleball Centre. Additionally, the Sarawak Pickleball Association has authorized the SPA to organize the first Sarawak Under-18 Inter-Division Pickleball Championship, tentatively set for July 25-26.
Recently, Chieng was re-elected as president of the SPA for the 2026–2027 term during the association's Annual General Meeting. Established in January 2024, the SPA has quickly expanded to include seven affiliated clubs: Lanang, Dudong, Bukit Assek, Pelawan, Iplay Swan Squad, Mighty Titan, and Smashkin Blaze.
For a town that had no structured pickleball framework just over a year ago, Sibu's advancements are remarkable. From developing school programs and organizing youth tournaments to planning a dedicated arena with public funding, the city's strategy reflects thoughtful planning rather than fleeting enthusiasm. While pickleball is experiencing a global boom, Sibu's growth in the sport is being cultivated with a clear vision and a strong sense of community involvement.
