Shubman Gill's Injury Poses Challenge for Team India Ahead of Upcoming Series
Team India's Concerns Over Shubman Gill's Injury
As India prepares for its matches against South Africa, a significant concern has emerged regarding the team's captain, Shubman Gill. Currently leading the Test and ODI squads, Gill has been sidelined due to a neck injury sustained during the second day of the first Test at Eden Gardens in Kolkata. Consequently, he missed participation in the ongoing second Test in Guwahati.
Recent updates indicate that Gill was not included in the ODI squad announced on Sunday. The three-match series is set to commence on November 30 in Ranchi, but selectors have made it clear that it is unlikely Gill will play for India again this year.
There were hopes regarding Gill's fitness for the T20I series scheduled for December, but a recent report suggests that his return may not occur until January 2026. An official from the BCCI mentioned that selectors are optimistic about Gill recovering from his neck injury before the ODI series against New Zealand.
In January 2026, India will face New Zealand in three ODIs and five T20Is. The first ODI is scheduled for January 11 in Vadodara, followed by matches on January 14 in Rajkot and January 18 in Indore. The T20I matches will take place from January 21 to 31 in Nagpur, Raipur, Guwahati, Visakhapatnam, and Thiruvananthapuram.
Meanwhile, discussions are ongoing regarding who will replace Gill in the team. Current indications suggest that Yashasvi Jaiswal is likely to make a return to the T20I squad. Jaiswal was part of the Indian team for the 2024 T20 World Cup and last played in July 2024 against Sri Lanka.
It's noteworthy that during the Asia Cup 2025 and the five-match T20I series in Australia, Gill was preferred over Jaiswal. Despite not having a standout performance with the bat, the team management maintained their faith in him. However, due to his injury, the team will need to adapt with a new combination on the field.
