Shubman Gill Reflects on World Cup Heartbreak and Future Aspirations
Shubman Gill's Unfinished Business After World Cup Loss
Indian cricket captain Shubman Gill expressed his determination to rectify the disappointment of losing the 2023 World Cup final against Australia. He emphasized the rarity of opportunities to represent the nation in such prestigious tournaments. Gill, who recently scored a remarkable 223* while chasing 406 runs in the second ODI against the West Indies, shared his thoughts during an interview on JioStar's 'The Shubman Show' ahead of the third ODI.
His comments followed the announcement of the 2027 Cricket World Cup schedule. India is set to kick off its campaign against the reigning champions, Australia, in Cape Town on October 7. A highly anticipated match against Pakistan is scheduled for October 10 in Johannesburg. India has been placed in Group A, which includes Australia, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Zimbabwe, and a Qualifier A, for the 14-team tournament co-hosted by South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia. The opening match will see India face Australia, a rematch of the 2023 World Cup final, where India's impressive 10-match winning streak ended.
'Unfinished Business': Gill on World Cup Heartbreak
During the show, Gill reflected on India's performance in the 2023 World Cup, stating that the team appeared to be the strongest throughout the tournament. However, he acknowledged that in such competitions, one poor performance can lead to defeat, and unfortunately, that was the case in the final. "It feels like unfinished business because of how we played in the tournament. We looked like the best team, but one bad game can change everything, especially in the final," he remarked.
He further noted the significance of playing in a World Cup, mentioning that opportunities are limited. "Every World Cup is a significant honor, and I feel grateful to have the chance to participate in another one," he added.
Gill's Impressive 2023 World Cup Performance
Gill had a commendable debut in the 2023 World Cup, scoring 354 runs in nine matches at an average of 44.25, despite missing the first two games due to dengue. His strike rate exceeded 106, featuring four half-centuries and a top score of 92.
Record-Breaking Achievements and Stellar ODI Career
In the recent series, Gill's outstanding performance included an unbeaten 223* off 133 balls, featuring 26 fours and eight sixes, marking the third-highest ODI score ever. He surpassed Ishan Kishan's previous record for the fastest double century, achieving it in just 117 balls. With two double centuries to his name, Gill is now second only to Rohit Sharma, who has three.
Gill also set a new record for the fastest century by an Indian captain, reaching his hundred in just 62 balls, breaking Rohit's previous record of 63 balls against Afghanistan during the 2023 ICC Cricket World Cup. This year, in 11 ODIs, Gill has amassed 894 runs at an impressive average of 127.71 and a strike rate of 119.51. Over his ODI career, he has scored 3,712 runs in 69 matches, averaging 65.12 with 11 centuries and 20 fifties.
