Gill's Perspective on World No. 1 Status

Indian cricket captain Shubman Gill shared his thoughts on reaching the pinnacle of ODI batting, describing it as a significant milestone akin to a 'tick mark.' Despite this achievement, he emphasized that his main priority is to perform well on the field, contribute to the team's victories, and play a crucial role in India's success.

"When I first attained the number one ranking, it was during the 2023 World Cup, and it felt rewarding. As a child, I always aspired to be the top ODI batsman, so achieving this feels fulfilling. However, my focus now is on how I can help the team win when I step onto the field," Gill stated during an interview on JioStar.

Captaincy: A Role of Responsibility

Ahead of the third ODI against the West Indies, Gill expressed that he sees his role as captain in two formats as a responsibility rather than a childhood dream. His primary ambition has always been to represent India and secure victories, and he believes that maintaining the right mindset helps him manage the pressures of leadership effectively.

"I perceive this role more as a responsibility. Growing up, my dream was never specifically to become the captain of India; it was always about playing for my country and winning matches. Being given this opportunity is a great honor and a significant responsibility. I approach it with the mindset that if I act with the right intent, everything will align properly," he added.

The Indian team is set to face the West Indies in the third and final ODI on Saturday at the PCA International Cricket Stadium in New Chandigarh.
