Shreyas Iyer's Stellar Century Leads Punjab Kings to Victory Over Lucknow Super Giants
Iyer and Prabhsimran Propel PBKS to Victory
In a remarkable display, Shreyas Iyer, captain of Punjab Kings (PBKS), achieved his first IPL century, scoring 101 runs off just 51 balls, complemented by 11 boundaries and 5 sixes. Prabhsimran Singh also contributed significantly with a solid 69 runs from 39 balls, guiding PBKS to a convincing 7-wicket win against Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) on Saturday night in Lucknow. This victory elevated Punjab Kings to fourth place in the league standings with a total of 15 points after their final group-stage match.
Chasing Down the Target
Set to chase a target of 197, PBKS began their innings with Priyansh Arya and Prabhsimran Singh. However, they faced an early setback when Mohammed Shami dismissed Arya for a golden duck in the first over. Shami struck again in his next over, sending Cooper Connolly back for 18 runs, which brought Iyer to the crease.
The pair stabilized the innings, reaching 65-2 before accelerating the score to 105-2 after 10 overs, with both players hitting boundaries consistently.
Prabhsimran reached his sixth fifty of the season in the 12th over, while Iyer followed suit in the next over, marking his sixth fifty as well and surpassing 7000 T20 runs. Notably, Prabhsimran became the first uncapped Indian player to score over 500 runs in multiple IPL seasons.
The duo continued their aggressive batting, surpassing 150 runs in just 14 overs. However, after conceding 12 runs in the 16th over, Arjun Tendulkar managed to dismiss Prabhsimran for 69 runs, bringing Suryansh Shedge to the crease.
Iyer maintained his momentum, scoring 20 runs in Shami's over, reducing the target to 15 runs needed from 24 balls. He and Shedge then secured the win in the 18th over, with Iyer hitting a six off the last ball to complete his maiden IPL century.
Lucknow's Competitive Innings
Earlier, LSG set a challenging total of 196/6, thanks to significant contributions from Josh Inglis and Abdul Samad, despite the Punjab bowlers' consistent breakthroughs.
After being invited to bat, LSG started strong with Inglis attacking PBKS pacer Arshdeep Singh for 16 runs in the first over. However, the momentum shifted quickly when Azmatullah Omarzai dismissed Arshin Kulkarni for a golden duck in the next over.
Marco Jansen then bowled Nicholas Pooran for just two runs, leaving LSG at 20/2. A recovery came in the fifth over when Ayush Badoni scored 18 runs off Jansen, bringing LSG to 42/2.
Badoni continued his aggressive play, hitting Omarzai for 22 runs in the next over. Despite losing two quick wickets, Lucknow ended the powerplay at 66/2.
Yuzvendra Chahal provided a breakthrough by dismissing Badoni for a quick 43 runs off 18 balls. Following his exit, Inglis and Rishabh Pant kept the scoreboard ticking, reaching 100/3 at the halfway mark.
Inglis reached his half-century in 28 balls, but Chahal struck again, removing Pant for 26 runs and breaking their 65-run partnership. At this point, LSG was at 134/4.
Despite the loss of Pant, runs continued to flow, and LSG reached 157/4 in 16 overs. However, Shashank Singh took the crucial wicket of Inglis, who scored 72 runs off 44 balls, leaving LSG at 169/5.
Jansen claimed another wicket, dismissing Mukul Choudhary for just one run. In the final over, Arshdeep Singh conceded 17 runs, allowing LSG to finish with a competitive total of 196/6, with Abdul Samad remaining not out at 37 runs off 20 balls.
