Shreyas Iyer's Captaincy Under Scrutiny Ahead of New Zealand T20I Series
Iyer vs. Suryakumar: A Captaincy Comparison
As the first T20I against New Zealand approaches, former Indian cricketer and assistant coach Abhishek Nayar shared his thoughts on the ongoing comparisons between current captain Shreyas Iyer and his predecessor, Suryakumar Yadav, who led India to a T20 World Cup victory. Nayar believes these comparisons are misplaced, especially considering Iyer's extensive experience playing outside India. He emphasized that a successful series in New Zealand could significantly enhance Iyer's standing among his peers.
Upcoming T20I Series: A Crucial Test for Iyer
India is set to kick off a five-match T20I series against New Zealand, starting Thursday. This series is particularly important for Shreyas Iyer, who faced challenges in his initial captaincy, losing series to Ireland and England. Although he secured a series win in Zimbabwe and an Asian Games gold in Japan, his performance as a T20I captain has not met expectations in international matches.
Nayar Discusses Captaincy Dynamics
During an appearance on JioHotstar's 'Out or Not Out', Nayar highlighted the differences in the conditions faced by Iyer and Suryakumar. He noted that Suryakumar's captaincy was largely based in India, while Iyer has already led the team in several overseas matches. Nayar stated, "It's not about whether he is worthy in comparison to Surya; the context is different. Iyer has had to navigate more challenging conditions abroad, which is where a captain's true mettle is tested. Winning in New Zealand would be a significant achievement for him."
Iyer's T20I Captaincy Record
As of now, Shreyas Iyer has captained India in 21 T20Is, achieving 11 victories, with eight losses and two matches resulting in no outcome. His win percentage stands at just over 52%. Notably, six of his losses occurred in overseas matches, including two against the West Indies at home. Despite these setbacks, he has also celebrated victories, including an Asian Games gold and wins against Zimbabwe and Afghanistan.
Suryakumar's Impressive Captaincy Stats
In contrast, Suryakumar Yadav boasts an impressive record with 40 wins out of 52 matches, suffering only eight losses, with two ties and no results. His win percentage of 76.92% places him among the most successful T20 captains in the sport's history.
India's T20I Squad for the Series
The Indian T20I squad for the upcoming series includes: Shreyas Iyer (Captain), Abhishek Sharma, Sanju Samson (Wicketkeeper), Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, Ishan Kishan (Wicketkeeper), Tilak Varma (Vice-Captain), Axar Patel, Shivam Dube, Nitish Kumar Reddy, Naman Dhir, Prince Yadav, Mayank Yadav, Arshdeep Singh, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Varun Chakaravarthy, and Kuldeep Yadav.
