Shreyas Iyer Takes Over as T20I Captain for India

In a significant leadership change, Shreyas Iyer is appointed as the new captain of India's T20I team, replacing Suryakumar Yadav, with Tilak Verma as his deputy. This decision follows Yadav's mixed performance in recent tournaments, including the ICC T20 World Cup 2026. Iyer, returning from a successful IPL season, is expected to lead the team in upcoming matches against Ireland and England. The cricketing community eagerly anticipates how this new leadership will shape India's performance in the T20 format.

Leadership Changes in Indian T20I Team

Shreyas Iyer is poised to take over the captaincy of India's senior men's T20I team, stepping in for Suryakumar Yadav, with Tilak Verma set to be his vice-captain, as reported by sources from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).

The decision was reached by BCCI chief selector Ajit Agarkar, head coach Gautam Gambhir, and the selection committee, who have unanimously agreed on Iyer's new role. Although the topic of T20I captaincy was not on the agenda during the recent BCCI Apex Council meeting, top officials have reportedly endorsed Iyer and Varma's appointments.

Suryakumar Yadav's Recent Performance

Suryakumar Yadav led the Indian squad to victory in the ICC T20 World Cup 2026, successfully defending their title and making history as the first team to do so. However, his individual performance raised concerns, as he accumulated only 242 runs across nine matches during the tournament. In the IPL 2026 season, he scored a mere 270 runs for the Mumbai Indians, contributing to the team's disappointing ninth-place finish.

Shreyas Iyer's Impressive Return

Iyer, who last represented India in a T20I against Australia in December 2023, is making a comeback after a stellar performance in the IPL 2026, where he scored 498 runs for the Punjab Kings.

Upcoming T20I Matches

India's next T20I series will take place during their tour of Ireland, featuring two matches before they head to England for a total of five T20Is and three ODIs. The first T20I against Ireland is scheduled for June 26, followed by the second match on June 28.
