Shreyas Iyer Discusses Recovery and Aspirations

As the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 approaches, Punjab Kings (PBKS) captain Shreyas Iyer reflected on his challenging recovery from a spleen injury sustained during last year's tour of Australia. He expressed his determination to pursue the trophy during the jersey launch event held in Mohali on Friday, which was sponsored by CP PLUS.

Event Highlights and Key Attendees

The jersey launch was graced by notable figures, including Satish Menon, CEO of Punjab Kings, Saurabh Arora, Chief Commercial Officer, Anup Nair, Director of Strategy & Operations at CP PLUS, and Sanjay Gogia, Director of Sales at CP PLUS, along with Iyer and teammate Arshdeep Singh.

Iyer's Journey Back from Injury

During the event, Iyer shared his experience of facing adversity after suffering a spleen injury while attempting a catch in the final ODI against Australia. This incident led to a significant weight loss of seven kilograms due to hospitalization. "Returning from an injury is always tough. I lost about seven kilos, and regaining that weight required considerable effort. However, I thrive on challenges and am proud to represent my team again," Iyer stated.

Recent Performance and Future Goals

After his recovery, Iyer returned to captain Mumbai in the Vijay Hazare Trophy (VHT) in January, scoring 45 against Punjab and 82 against Himachal Pradesh. However, his ODI series against New Zealand was less fruitful, accumulating only 60 runs in three innings, with a top score of 49. India faced a 2-1 series defeat, marking their first loss to New Zealand on home soil in ODIs.

Aiming for the Trophy

Embracing the affection from Punjab fans, who affectionately call him 'Sarpanch Sahab', Iyer emphasized his ambition. "Expectations are high, which I find exciting. I relish the challenge, but our primary goal is to win every match. My focus is on the trophy," he remarked.

Fostering Team Spirit

Iyer highlighted the importance of building strong relationships off the field as the team prepares for the intense competition ahead. "This is a time when we live like a family for two months. The more time we spend together, the better we understand each other. We often gather in the game room to play FIFA and other games. While match strategies are discussed shortly before games, fostering this bond off the field ultimately leads to better performance," he explained.

Arshdeep Singh Shares the Captain's Optimism

Local favorite and fast bowler Arshdeep Singh echoed Iyer's optimistic outlook, especially regarding playing in front of their enthusiastic home crowd in Mullanpur. "Feeling pressure is a privilege," he said with a smile. "The support from the crowd is exhilarating. When they cheer for us, it feels like 30,000 people are running alongside us. We aim to win all our home matches this season."

Aiming for Future Success

Reflecting on his journey with the franchise, Arshdeep expressed gratitude for the support he received early in his career. "The journey has been incredible. When I first joined, they believed in me and recognized my potential when no other team did. I appreciate that trust and hope to stay here long-term, aiming to win many trophies for the team," he stated.

Punjab Kings Ready for an Exciting Season

With a fearless captain, a cohesive team, and a strong coaching staff, the Punjab Kings are poised to deliver an exciting brand of cricket this IPL season. Following a successful campaign last year, where they finished as runners-up to Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), who ended an 18-year trophy drought, their season will kick off against the 2022 champions, Gujarat Titans, on March 31 in New Chandigarh.
