Shivam Shukla Discusses Rugby Premier League and Hyderabad Heroes' Journey
Rugby Premier League: A Thrilling Season
The Rugby Premier League is currently underway, featuring six teams competing for the coveted trophy. Among the standout players is Shivam Shukla from the Hyderabad Heroes, who have successfully advanced to the semi-finals. Shivam is celebrated for his commitment, resilience, and exceptional performances on both national and international stages. He began his rugby career with the Delhi Hurricanes Rugby Club and has since earned a reputation for his leadership and tactical acumen. Ahead of the crucial semi-final, he shared his thoughts with a sports media outlet.
Q. How do you feel about the Rugby Premier League this season? What are your impressions so far?
Shivam: I was really looking forward to Season 2. I missed out last year, so I was eager to participate this time. Being selected by Hyderabad has motivated me to elevate my game alongside international players. The excitement is palpable, especially since we've won our last two matches.
Q. As an experienced player who has represented India, how do you view rugby's connection with Indian audiences?
Shivam: When I started playing rugby in 2015, the viewership was minimal. However, over the years, especially with the rise of social media, interest has surged. The Rugby Premier League has also contributed to this growth, as more people are becoming aware of the sport. Initially, even my family didn't know what rugby was; I had to explain it to them. But now, awareness is increasing, and with more media coverage, rugby's popularity in India is on the rise.
Q. Do you think there's still hesitation among people when it comes to choosing rugby as a sport?
Shivam: Yes, there was a time when I played Kabaddi in school and represented my state and country in it. Transitioning to rugby was challenging, especially since there were limited opportunities and financial support. For years, I regretted not sticking with Kabaddi, as it offered better job prospects. However, post-lockdown, the government has started recognizing rugby, leading to job opportunities for players like me. Things are improving now.
Q. The Sports Ministry has proposed allowing foreign players to participate in Indian sports to strengthen the ecosystem. What are your thoughts on this?
Shivam: In rugby, we need international players to help us grow. The sport is still developing in India, and having experienced players can provide valuable insights and structure. It's not about taking anyone's place; it's about learning and improving.
Q. What can we expect from the Hyderabad Heroes in this season of the RPL?
Shivam: Last year, we fell short in the semi-finals, but this time, I believe we can win the championship. Our team has great chemistry, and our international players are meshing well with us. We understand each other on the field, and our coach provides excellent support. Despite a rocky start, we've improved significantly in our last two matches. Our focus is on maintaining our structure, and I am confident we will reach the finals this year.
