Shimla's Historic Ice Skating Rink Thrives Amid Climate Challenges
Renewed Enthusiasm at Shimla's Ice Skating Rink
The century-old natural ice skating rink in Shimla is experiencing a surge of interest this winter, with both skaters and club members optimistic about an extended and improved season thanks to favorable dry weather. So far, 24 successful ice skating sessions have taken place at this iconic venue, and organizers are hopeful that this number will exceed last year's total.
Situated in the heart of Shimla, the Ice Skating Rink is one of the few locations in India that offers natural ice skating, making it a unique winter attraction for both locals and visitors. Last year, only 35 sessions were held due to unpredictable weather conditions, but expectations are higher this season.
Local skater Harshit Lal shared his thoughts, stating, "Ice skating in Shimla is an incredible experience. It's something everyone should try, whether you're a tourist or a local. This city is unique in having a natural ice skating rink, and it's truly beautiful. I've been skating for five years now. Initially, I had no experience with ice or roller skating, and I fell many times, but it was enjoyable. Now that I've learned, it feels even better."
Reflecting on past seasons, he noted, "In 2020, the ice season was excellent, with colder weather and frequent snowfall. However, due to climate change, snowfall has significantly decreased. We eagerly await snow each year and believe more trees should be planted. For children, I recommend experiencing the natural ice skating here; it's a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity that shouldn't be missed."
Rajat Malhotra, Secretary of the Shimla Ice Skating Club, provided an update on the current season, stating that they have completed 24 sessions and hope to conduct more if the weather remains favorable. He mentioned, "Ice skating is a long-standing tradition here. The club was founded in 1920 and has now celebrated 105 years. This year, we began the season almost a week earlier than last year, starting on December 3. Although we faced some unfavorable weather, conditions have improved, allowing us to maintain high-quality ice. Today marks our 24th session."
Malhotra expressed optimism for the season, saying, "Compared to last year, we anticipate more sessions this year. Last year, unpredictable weather limited us to only 35 sessions. This year, we've already completed 24 and hope the season will extend further. Ice skating is entirely dependent on clear weather and sub-zero temperatures; if conditions worsen, ice formation becomes impossible."
He also highlighted the impact of changing environmental conditions, stating, "The weather has become increasingly erratic. Global warming is a significant concern. In the past, there were more trees in the surrounding areas. Despite these challenges, the quality of the ice remains comparable to previous years. When a season is successful, people are more inclined to invest in ice skating for their children in the following year. It's one of the best winter activities in Shimla, especially during the holidays."
The rink also hosts activities like ice hockey, figure skating, and speed skating, although national-level competitions have gradually moved to locations like Ladakh, Kaza, and an all-weather rink in Dehradun, where ice conditions last longer.
Students and young participants view ice skating as both a recreational and fitness activity. Local student Avali Negi remarked, "I've been ice skating since 2020. The experience here is fantastic and enjoyable. The natural ice rink offers a unique fun that artificial rinks can't match. People should definitely join; it's a great way to make friends and spend quality time while also providing excellent exercise for the legs and arms."
Another participant, Aanya Kapor, emphasized the sport's scenic beauty and social significance, stating, "This natural ice skating rink is beautiful, allowing you to enjoy skating with stunning views and clouds right in front of you. In winter, it's one of the best activities in Shimla, perfect for enjoying with friends during the holidays."
Kapor further added, "With many children turning to smoking and drugs, ice skating is a much healthier alternative. Here, we have ice hockey, skating, fancy dress competitions, and various activities. Each year brings something new. However, pollution and climate change have reduced ice formation. Still, this venue provides an excellent option for children to stay active and engaged."
The Shimla Ice Skating Club, established in 1920, is among the oldest ice skating clubs in Asia. The natural rink, created without artificial refrigeration, has long been a symbol of Shimla's colonial-era sporting heritage. Despite the growing challenges posed by climate change, the club remains committed to preserving this unique winter sport tradition, making the rink not just a sporting venue but a living piece of Shimla's history.
