Reflections on the Anderson Tendulkar Trophy

New Delhi [India], August 18: Following the conclusion of the Anderson Tendulkar Trophy 2025, which ended in a 2-2 stalemate between England and India, all-rounder Shardul Thakur shared insights on the disappointment felt by his teammates, spinner Kuldeep Yadav and opener Abhimanyu Easwaran, who were sidelined during the five-Test series.

Kuldeep Yadav has not participated in Test matches since the first Test against New Zealand in October 2024. Since making his Test debut in 2017, he has played only 13 matches, claiming 56 wickets at an impressive average of 22.16, including four five-wicket hauls. His exclusion has drawn criticism, particularly given his remarkable strike rate of 37.3, the highest among spin bowlers with at least 50 Test wickets.

On the other hand, Abhimanyu Easwaran has established himself as a key player in domestic cricket for Bengal, amassing 7,674 runs in 101 first-class matches at an average of 48.87, which includes 27 centuries and 29 fifties. Despite his impressive record, he is still awaiting his Test debut.

In an interview with Boria Majumdar on Revsportz, Shardul expressed, “I have also faced similar situations. As athletes, we experience a whirlwind of emotions, and it’s challenging to sit out and question our worth. It’s important to recognize that not everyone gets the opportunity to represent India. The competition is fierce, and only 11 players make it to the final team.”

He further elaborated, “We must accept that the management selects the best 11 based on pitch and weather conditions. It’s crucial to remind ourselves that this wasn’t our game, and it’s a privilege to travel with the team and share the dressing room. While I don’t have all the answers, patience is key as we await our opportunity.”

Both Kuldeep and Easwaran are anticipated to participate in the upcoming 2025 Duleep Trophy, with Kuldeep representing Central Zone and Easwaran playing for East Zone.
